I like talking about things that start with “p” like politics (pragmatic progressive), psychedelics, psychoanalysis, philosophy, Portland, the Pacific Northwest & “m”—music, mushrooms. Parent of 2 teens. Daimista (IYKYK).

The guy that started all this gave an interview & he’s very articulate in explaining why he wears the costume

“I’m worried about my community… I’m out here in a frog costume to show how ridiculous the notion that we’re violent terrorists is, and showcase how that narrative is wrong…”

Serious Q: is it too late to give this dude the Nobel Peace Prize? 🐸 🏆

This is silly, but not in a good way—like dressing up in a frog costume to protest ICE

Was just at a neighborhood school at dismissal. Hundreds of people with whistles surrounding the school and stationed down every block making sure ICE doesn’t snatch anyone. The same is happening at all the schools around here. I love my neighborhood and I love Chicago.

Thanks, I’m fine. This was a decade ago now—but it’s something that really sticks with you!

That’s definitely what I (admittedly a non-expert in this) think is the best place to start re: police reform.

Seems like the easiest to sell to the cops themselves “you didn’t sign up to be a social worker, let someone who is handle that”

Was fascinating processing all this with him.

He stopped seeing me for insurance reasons later in the summer, have always wondered what he ended up doing? Could probably do some googling & find out, but I don’t track former patients like that just as a general principle.

I’m a therapist & in early 2020 a guy came to see me who was going into the police academy because he really thought people who believed in reform should try to do so from within. Was already really torn over whether this was a good idea, then George Floyd happened…

Can both increase/tighten the requirements & make a concerted effort to hire more people w/humanities degrees. If you can legit advertise that you’re developing a new kind of police force I bet you could get some amount more progressive minded people to sign up
cyanescens.bsky.social
Yes! This is a great one, definitely part of any serious reform project!

Yeah, this is the fundamental tension. While I also would like for ICE/DHS to stop their operations, the only ones who can stop them legally are the feds who sent them.

Getting arrested by state police means the state has control over charges and sentencing. Better Dem state AG than Bondi.

A Chicago DA will charge less & may quietly drop charges (as happened with most arrests in Portland in 2020); the feds are charging to the max & may not let you plead down.

Pritzker more likely to pardon you than Trump.

Better Cook County jail than CECOT

While I’m at it, Jennifer Rubin, formerly conservative columnist for WaPo, has also made what seems at this point like a full, genuine turn away from the GOP & seems like a middle of the road Democrat now.

Kudos to all these folks.
cyanescens.bsky.social
I never paid it much attention in the past—whereas Kristol seemed totally unavoidable if you followed politics in the W years, but every time I see a screenshot of The Drudge Report home page, same deal.
cyanescens.bsky.social
It shouldn’t still surprise at this point—it’s been years now—but still a tad jarring!
cyanescens.bsky.social
Yeah, I spent a weekend once in a county jail far from home & had to negotiate a plea bargain with a Republican “law & order” DA so I still always think about if you might get arrested what’s the “best” way to do so?
cyanescens.bsky.social
Also because this made me think about it again, I really liked the piece you did on the anti-trans shift in England over the last 10-15 years & can’t recall if I replied to say so when I read it a couple weeks ago.

Closest I’ve gotten at least to feeling like I understood what was going on!
cyanescens.bsky.social
Now I’m wondering if anyone Dems (save maybe “the Squad”) have ever gone on record as supporting ICE abolition?

I think that should be the mainstream Democratic Party position going forward but I bet not many get good grades right now
cyanescens.bsky.social
👀 This is a great idea & I’m looking forward to seeing what the results look like:

i want a "resistance ranking" for dems that grades them on how seriously they're taking this

something like support for:

1. prosecuting gop criminality
2. court reform
3. procedural agressiveness
4. end ICE
5. trans rights
6. calling this fascism

+ points for having taken personal risks

Still, state & local will likely be more restrained than Feds, w/ no tie to the area & extremely permissive rules of engagement (probably have been promised a federal pardon if needed too).

Much better to be arrested, charged & if it comes to it, imprisoned locally than federally.

Excuse me I was just passing by and noticed that you dropped this reply in the wrong thread.

At least I think it’s the wrong thread since the topic was whether anyone had donated a billion dollars or more & this doesn’t seem to fit?
