I think my spouse probably celebrated more than I did whenever I had a new book coming out. It was one of the things I adored about him...how much he supported me and my creative endeavors.
So tell me, #writingcommunity... what do you do to celebrate a writing milestone? And what is your cutoff for what deserves a celebration vs. what doesn't? Or do you have a sliding scale?

I'm so terrible at remembering to celebrate, probably mostly because I don't have an idea of what I want to do.

When Rob Reiner was on his all-time epic run at the start of his career, he had an opportunity to read a script that was looking for a production partner, and he lost his mind for it. He decided Castle Rock had to have it, no matter what.

If we are really worried about the pressure put on the NHS by flu then shouldn’t we have offered the flu vaccine to more people for free?
Super flu' wave hits hospitals in England with no peak yet
Numbers in hospital rise by more than 50% in a week as NHS faces 'worst-case scenario'.

Go read them instead.

Activist Mollie Davis unfurled a scroll of all the school shootings in the US
In 2019.

I deliberately showed the end of the scroll in this illustration, with the hope & belief that there will be an end someday.

How much longer until we act??

I am once again here to implore you to use ALT text on every single image you can.

You can change your settings so that it won't let you post an image without it, and thus you don't have to worry about forgetting.

It only takes a little to be inclusive.

I genuinely affirmatively think that it is now a democratic imperative to spend as much time as you can offline. Read more offline. Socialise more offline. Discuss media you consume with other people offline. Out there is a real world full of people looking for real human connection - seize it
Reading a bunch of books this year has really solidified for me how awful the internet is in comparison nowadays. Obviously in terms of general hostility but more generally in terms of lack of depth, insight, reading comprehension, base of knowledge, etc

Poverty is a policy choice. Concentrated wealth is a policy choice. Inequality is a policy choice. None of it is natural or inevitable. Remember: We have the power to build a system that serves the many, not the powerful few.

This. I want one where you can...figure out what makes them who they are.
What is your favourite kind of antagonist?

One that makes sense.

I've seen too many writers, both in books and movies, create "inherently evil" characters. Not a fan.

Nobody is "inherently evil". People have reasons. People make choice. Show me.

Don't dehumanise your villains, that's boring.
What is your favourite kind of antagonist?

Intelligent and well spoken, yet still the worst person you've ever met.

A lot of Americans are weighing in on the tragedy at Bondi Beach in Australia & saying MORE guns is the answer.

They should sit this one out.

The fact that the shooters didn’t have automatic weapons saved lives.

America has had more than 350 mass shootings this year. More guns is never the answer

If you are worried this is too big an executive function barrier you can go to a pharmacy and they will probably just jab you. That is what I did.

I'm not saying it's necessarily the right way to do this, that is just how much I am not fucking around with the measles
Go to your doctor and get your measles titers checked to make sure you are still immune and if not get re-vaccinated. It’s more and more likely all of us are going to eventually come in contact with it.
The thing about measles is that it’s the only known virus that triggers immune amnesia - it causes your immune system to forget everything it has previously learned. Meaning you essentially reset to zero and are now at risk of basically everything.

It can take 2-3 years to get immunities back.

Heartbreaking and horrifying to go to bed reading about the mass shooting at Brown University and wake up to read about the mass shooting at a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach. Thinking of the victims, their loved ones, and those affected by the hate that drove these attacks.

Folks in power will always attempt to discourage action.

All those folks who insist on jumping on boycott posts and with unmitigated self-satisfaction announcing how it won't work?

That's the voice of the folks in power. They're just amplifying it, knowingly or not.

And yet another reason why every person in the U.S. should read atleast one slave narrative.
#Lit #BlackSky

I never use ChatGPT because people in my family who were forced to leave school early always said ability to read and write was a blessing.

Literacy is a right we need to protect.
"The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass" details how he was being taught to read by his enslaver's wife, and the "Master" found out, flew into a rage, and said it was dangerous & would change him.

This is how young Douglass realized that literacy (reading & writing) was key to liberation.

Back when I was more active in the adoptee community, I recall a lot of "term policing" from the industry. You weren't supposed to use "adoptee." You couldn't say "real family" for people actually related to you. Fuck that. I as the "child" in the center of all this, I can use any language I want.
