At the end of it all, no matter what side we’re on, what lies are the most comforting or what we believe, deep down we all actually want the facts and the truth. Since our species first walked, we’ve needed to know if there are lions in the grass. Reality matters. The bill for lies always comes due.

absolutely bizarre to see a violent, rogue american regime, which is threatening military attacks on a bunch of major trading partners and close allies, and openly fantasizing about hitler-style wars of territorial conquest, covered in the tone of horse-race political commentary

These freaks want territorial expansion and they know Trump will do everything he can to deliver.

This isn’t just a tweet from some random asshole either. This is Stephen Miller’s wife. Miller was in the room with Trump during the kidnapping of Maduro.

So much of American history is just impulsive and extremely stupid elites, who don't believe in consequences because they have never personally experienced them, doing highly consequential stuff because they're bored or believe it might make them richer. I guess a lot of our culture, too.

Im seeing discussions about consultations with congress, authorizations of force etc. I have to say this transcends any of what I would call sub constitutional technicalities. The president has gone to war with a foreign power and, it seems, kidnapped a foreign head of state on the basis of nothing.

Whatever else you think you are getting, the last thirty years have proven that if you elect Republicans, you get:

Tax cuts for the rich
Regime change
Massively increased debt

And that's about it.

RFK Jr. ordered the CDC to terminate their flu vaccination ad campaign immediately after taking office.

Just in case anyone was curious about his silence in the face of what is emerging as an unusually severe flu season and why he’s not out encouraging vaccines.

Trump pardoned the perpetrators of all these physical wounds that were received in the literal defense of our democracy.
Amid whitewashing of history of Capitol siege, new transcript of House interview w/ Jack Smith highlights police injuries:

"Cracked ribs, traumatic brain injuries, smashed spinal disks & heart attacks as rioters used bats, flagpoles, chemical sprays, stolen police shields & batons"

I'm entirely serious about this: until you internalize the view that urban America is Real America, you won't see the urgency of structural reform of an American government whose fundamental structures so disadvantage its population centers—the great engines of its prosperity, progress, & culture.
Another good practice for the New Year would be for all the non-fascists in America who want to opine about politics to really begin believing that urban America is Real America & that its denizens are The Authentic People. Get some self-respect & drop the volkish nationalist view that they're not
And I think liberals should stop taking the bait and ceding ground on immigration.

Immigration is good. Multiculturalism is good. Free trade is good. Stop being embarrassed to say so.

The idea that we need to deport 100 million people - almost one out of every three Americans! - was, a year ago, a deranged claim you’d hear from neo-Nazis to give themselves permission for limitless mass violence. Now it’s coming directly from this horrific agency’s horrific press office

After 7 people died from poisoned Tylenol in 1982 the drug industry voluntarily developed tamper-resistant packaging and Congress passed a law making tampering a federal crime.

So far 14 deaths are linked to chatbots (according to Wikipedia) and it's crickets from both Congress and LLM operators.
Uh… check out what ChatGPT allegedly told a man before he killed his mother and then himself.

despite everything, the US has naturalized more immigrants this year than Japan has. i don't mean "has admitted this year." i mean "has ever admitted in its entire history as a country."
Following the lead of the US and UK, two dying empires whose punitive immigration policies are largely based on racism, might not be the best idea. The Japanese economy and social safety net depends on immigration. They should be making it easier to become a resident not harder.
Many foreign residents in Japan worry that the proposed higher residence permit fees will create financial burdens. Students and families on dependent visas could be disproportionately affected.

I agree to the extent that this is accurate, but not exonerating
I agree with this. Most people who heard “mass deportation” implicitly added “of criminals and recent migrants” to the phrase, something which the Trump campaign itself supported through surrogates like Tom Homan who even during the transition was talking about how the focus would be on “criminals.”

this seems specifically designed to break mail-in voting (where deadlines are defined by postmark)
As of 12/24/25, USPS changed policy on when they postmark mail. Mail dropped off is no longer guaranteed a same-day postmark. Tax returns & other time-sensitive items are now stamped when they reach a regional processing center, which may be days later. Plan deadlines accordingly to avoid penalties.
