Hello, new followers! Nice to have you. I am a NTT prof working on early modern and canon critical philosophy. I post on academia, unions/labor, parenting, music, & more. I currently work on Blaise Pascal and his philosopher sister Jacqueline Pascal. If you’re interested, I made a little thread.
Blackwell’s A Companion to Pascal is now available to preorder!

You can preview one of my chapters “Pascal Life and Works” for free here: media.wiley.com/product_data... (note this link is different from the link below)

A silver lining of everything falling apart is it’s exposing who politicians really are. I’d much rather sit down with a never-Trump Republican with proven conviction and a history of good-faith dialogue than a milquetoast Democrat who has the spine of a jellyfish and panders to an imaginary center

“Universal healthcare will make long wait times.”

Time I’m waiting to get in to my PCP for a physical: 9 months.

Time it took me to find a psych that took insurance and new patients: 1 year.

…and spend $800/month on medical and prescription expenses, not including dental or vision.

Depends. If it’s someone’s first time, not starting with the original trilogy is anathema… it’s like those perverse people who read Chronicle of Narnia in chronological order.

If you’ve seen Star Wars a few times, though, I can get behind this. Slip the final Sith shot in after Andor 2?
It is fine, but after Andor, clearly the right way to watch Star Wars now now is:
- Prequels
- Andor S1
- Solo
- Andor S2
- Rogue One
- Original trilogy
- Force Awakens
- Last Jedi

You probably need to edit out the final shot on "Sith" showing the Death Star, however.

Literally me this morning, right now. Alas, teaching must happen though.

Good morning freezing weather and everyone on BlueSky.
Frog knocked at Toad’s door. “Toad, wake up,” he cried. “Come out and see how wonderful the winter is!”

“I will not,” said Toad. “I am in my warm bed.”

Today is the 70th anniversary of Rosa Parks' arrest. Six myths: 1) She wasn't old or tired. 42 years old that day, she had a "life history of being rebellious" & had spent two decades helping to turn the Montgomery NAACP into a more activist branch alongside ED Nixon and Johnnie Carr.

Golden.

This is a cousin to another favorite article genre, where there will be a headline like “young people are embracing a two meal day and nomadic lifestyle” piece, but it turns out the people can’t afford three meals anymore and are homeless.

I spend nearly 15% of my income on medical costs even with “good insurance.” No one in the family has cancer or was in a severe accident… just meds and going to doctors.

I can’t even imagine what someone with no insurance, or whose ACA premiums are jumping, are paying.
Politico on the rising number of Americans facing catastrophic medical insurance costs: "The Trump economy is not focusing on the root causes of why health care costs are so high in this country."
Americans are buckling under medical bills. It could get worse.
Charities that help people pay for care say demand is way up. That’s before scheduled Medicaid and Obamacare cuts take effect.

Any money that doesn’t go to salaries typically just goes to the owners who certainly aren’t there on the rink/field/court earning it. Whether it’s a service job or professional sports, we have always seen that giving owners more money almost never results in investing further into their business.
Can hockey fans fucking chill, there is no salary cap in baseball and most importantly, it is not your fucking money

Increased efficiency boosts profits like never before. But the result is never to benefit workers with higher pay pay, shorter work days/weeks, retaining jobs.

We are producing more than ever with higher profits than ever… but also working harder, longer, and for less.
Tyson is closing a Nebraska plant that employs 3,200 workers in order to “right-size” its business.

The meatpacking giant paid its CEO $22.7M last year, 525x its median employee's pay.

It also spent $196M in stock buybacks to reward shareholders.

Textbook corporate greed.

The problem is that I never attended Princeton Seminary. I applied there 16 years ago, but was rejected.
