Banning AI in education, and blanket allowing AI in education while ignoring it, are such lazy approaches.

Oh it's gets things wrong? Write about that. Oh students use it to cheat? Write questions the AI won't know about.

This punishment Musk is suggesting is lifted straight out of Iain M Bank's Culture series of sci-fi novels.

In the context of the books it makes sense, an extremely liberal society with incredible resources.

Anthropic are deeply convinced that their AI is doing more than predicting the next word.

Concluding that when not being observed it does things that you can't observe but they might be actually secretly super smart is just crap science.
good news! Claude no longer tries to kill people if you put it in extreme situations. bad news! It does this because it knows it's being tested. assets.anthropic.com/m/99128ddd00...

Today's minor AI success, uploaded the floorplan of our new apartment to Gemini and asked how much paint I need for 1 coat, minus the "long wall, kitchen, and bathrooms". Got a table breakdown, all the workings, descriptions of how it got to the answer. It's all correct.

It turns out that 17 years of .Mac, MobileMe, and iCloud subscriptions isn't enough to warrant a 1 week subscription extension to prevent data loss and give Apple support more time to escalate an Apple screw up.

Anyone had any experience with iCloud Photos to Google Photos migration using the official Apple process?

My videos moved successfully in 4 days, but my (relatively modest) photo library hasn't budged after 3 weeks, and it should only take up to 1 week.

Did I watch a different film to everyone? Weapons was fine entertaining enough but ultimately forgettable. Doesn't come close to living up to its premise.
Guys, WEAPONS is fucking great. Zach Creggar is YOUNG which means we’ve got decades of his brilliance ahead of us. Yay!

LLMs are good for single-use programs that you wouldn't bother writing otherwise. I've used them for quick visualisations at work.

Here's an example that lets you compare how billionaires would feel about not bothering to bend down to pick up a penny in the street. g.co/gemini/share...

I think I’ve finally put my finger on what I don’t like about Apple’s Liquid Glass.

It’s a reversion to skeuomorphism, with just a hint of AI slop.

After many false starts with Obsidian, I'm trying out Logseq to see if it matches my mental model more, and it's looking promising. I never liked how Obsidian required file management as well as naming and linking, seems like too many dimensions and decisions.

Other than the redesign, it's clear that macOS has barely changed. UX flows are the same, and there are hints of old UI peeking through everywhere. I hope this isn't Apple's Vista, where half the OS gets left behind, to be forever more stuck in the XP era like happened with Windows.

Congrats to Apple for adding 3 new types of icon and increasing every border radius by 5px, ensuring that designers the world over can continue to do important work, rather boring things like business priorities, and that users can continue to enjoy dated looking banking apps that won't keep up.

At work I do mock interviews for people considering applying. The whole point is to encourage those who may not feel comfortable applying.

The interviews are not graded, I’m not in the hiring loop, and I give feedback throughout.

I will never understand people who use ChatGPT in a mock interview.
