Point from this convo that I will repeat in the future next time someone’s mad at me is that a review is not written to convince the reader a game is X, it’s to convince the reader that I the critic think a game is X.

Potentially, but how do you know that? Do you play just games from known names, games Steam filtered as popular, just games that could go to PAX or hit a major showcase?

These are all imperfect methods. The best way is... to play.

Even people who create legit videos on yt don't really know how to compete with this. The algo is incredibly stacked against those who just want to make cool stuff and favors creators who make the same low effort thing everyday. You have to play that game on yt but most creatives don't want to.

The "games press doesn't cover X" thing is usually telling because people never actually mean games press at large they just mean IGN. "Why doesn't IGN cover my very niche indie game?"

And listen...at a certain point it just gets harder to justify to yourself or your family why you shouldn't just get a day job completely unrelated to games or whatever. What sucks is a lot of us don't even know where to start or tried and couldn't get it going. So I dunno, hell. It sucks out here.

The space is completely broken. Love for the medium from workers is holding it together but in a lot places that’s being exploited and in the places it’s not the amount of work available isn’t sustainable… at the end of the day something has to give.

Even one step away from games media and into publishing or marketing you can make thousands of dollars more cutting (or even just altering) a 90 second trailer then you can producing a review or feature. Extremely talented people I know here are fighting tooth and nail to stay in the industry but…

As a video person you can make more in one day outside of the space without producing a finished deliverable then you can in a week of scripting, 20+ hours of gameplay, and a cut that’s seen multiple revisions. 🫠

1. The gaming press has been decimated by business suits, and the whims of an uncaring search engine behemoth
2. Doing the job means you get death threats and harassment
3. There are more games released in 1 week than there were in entire months in 2015
