The spreadsheet on this clay tablet, which is almost 4,000 years old, is organised into columns for furrowed area, grain produced, land not sown, and the field’s name.

The first field is called “Of the soldiers who stood in for their fathers”.

It’s ancient Excel, but I find that incredibly moving

Spitballing here, but maybe “Republicans abolished the police“ could be the attack angle. The goons in Call of Duty costumes are not policing. They are armying. Bring back Barney Fife. The actual military has to dress more like police to avoid getting confused with the fake military now.
I mean, sure, but that is a fundamentally different ask than "abolish ICE"

Hence my concern that this has a significant and increasing risk of becoming the next defund the police

If Jeff Bezos could afford to spend $75 million on the Melania movie & $500 million for a yacht to sail off to his $55 million wedding to give his wife a $5 million ring, please don't tell me he needed to fire one-third of the Washington Post staff.

If you're acting with even-handed integrity in law enforcement, is this supposed to happen? "Moments after federal officers fatally shot Alex Pretti, ... Customs and Border Protection officials texted Stephen Miller, ... who framed the government’s response."

For those unfamiliar, in On Violence, Arendt points out that the ability to dish out violence is often confused for power - the ability to get compliance without violence.

Successful governance relies almost entirely on power, because violence is expensive and limited.

Some thoughts:

1. The deadline for nominating a person or group for the Nobel Peace Prize is Feb. 1.

2. History professors are qualified nominators.

3. The people of Minnesota have been awe-inspiringly peaceful in the face of state violence.

4. He would be so mad.

I lucked into an amazing performance lately in Quebec City by Alexis Chartrand (fiddle) and Nic Gareiss (who dances unbelievably musically).

Here's the best Nic video I've found.

At one point today, there were 283 Minnesota attorneys doing a training on how to file emergency habeas petitions to keep our neighbors from being shipped out of state and held indefinitely.

That would be the second largest law firm in the state. And that training was just put together this week.

A competent opposition political party would cut together the footage of what ICE had been doing in the twin cities with Mike Johnson saying "ICE is doing what ICE is designed to do" and have it in ads all across the country
Mike Johnson comes out against additional guardrails on ICE as Democrats call for it.

“I think there's a lot of Democrats playing games right now with national security and with law enforcement. And I think it's dangerous. Ice is doing what ice is designed to do by its very name.”

Our entire politics now is about our sundowning, failing, unpopular leader, whose powers are clearly ebbing, maniacally trying to find ways to restore his STRENGTH, POWER, and MANLINESS.

Like seizing Greenland; taking VZ’s oil; killing men in boats; terrorizing US cities; bombing other countries.

Not does the bigger boss promote anyone's prosperity but his own.

There might be quite an interesting historical argument to be had here. Specifically, how true - or untrue - is it that America was founded on rugged individualism? I think the conflation of individualism with freedom may be as much myth as truth. It treats two behavioral axes as if they were one.
No. Hell no. This is a country founded upon rugged individualism/individual freedom. NOTHING should or will replace individualism. Not here. No MAGA authoritarianism in America, and no leftist collectivism in America. Yes, all of us should help those less fortunate, but hell no to this.👇
