Current journalist here. It is REALLY REALLY bad public health to use needle images. Just like it's REALLY REALLY bad to use people playing in water on a hot summers day. We need to do better.
Former news video editor here. There's a practical reason they don't. They don't have the right to any images of sick people. You can't just grab a picture off google and throw it on tv/your website. You need the rights. So either you filmed it yourself, or a newswire you subscribe to did.
Just imagining how much better it would be if ALL news stories about vaccine-preventable illnesses were illustrated with pictures of people with the disease, not pictures of needle injections. If you must show something that people will find scary & unpleasant, make it the disease, not the cure.
