good afternoon #portfolioday! I'm currently working on a comic called Summer Grass, Winter Worm which is a drama/slice of life about entomology and Tibetan Buddhism. you can read the beginning here: grassworm.net
4 panel comic drawn with digital pencil.
1 - Thulia offers white silk scarf toward three people seated at a table full of food.
THULIA: This is for the Venerable
SONGTSEN: Lhamo Yeshe Rinpoche.
2 - The scarf is held at one end by Thulia's round hand and on the other end by Lhamo's pointy, long-nailed hand.
3 - Lhamo holds the scarf close to/in front of her mouth. Her eyes are closed.
Narration: I couldn't hear the words she whispered -- just a quiet -- rhythm --
4 - A bony hand with long pointed thumb nail (foreground right) offers the scarf back to Thulia (background left) who wears a dopey smile.
LHAMO: Welcome, and may all your efforts bear fruit.
THULIA: [tiny] thank you!
Narration: --of susurrations 2 panel comic drawn in digital pencil.
1 - Nyima stands in a shadowed passageway, gesturing beyond the open doorframe toward a 3-tiered, octagonal pagoda.
NYIMA: In the center is our prayer hall
2 - The pagoda is shown in more detail and from an upper angle. Nyima smiles, tiny, in the foreground.
NYIMA: The upper level belongs to my mother, but the ground floor is for everyone! 3 panel comic in digital pencil and watercolor.
1 - Thulia reaches under their shirt collar. They have tired eyes and a kitty smile. Around them, text with musical notes says "worm eggs, worm eggs"
2 - Close up of Thulia pulling a cloth with small dark and light circles from their shirt collar.
THULIA: Ta-da!
3 - The cloth is shown in more detail--it is semi transparent, folded multiple times, and contains many of these tiny circles, some dark, some light. These are silkworm eggs at various stages of incubation. Nyima looks on in profile (close up) from the right.
NYIMA: They're sort of... blue?
THULIA: That's the worms! 4 panel comic in digital pencil.
1 - Nyima sits in the grass, framed from the back and right, so that she sits at the left of the panel, face in profile. She is looking out onto the sky with no visible expression.
NYIMA: Mother says I should stop helping with the yartsa after this year.
2 - Two figures sit in the grass, the left figure (Thulia) hidden by a speech bubble. On the right, Nyima has her knees up, her arms folded across them, and her face hidden.
NYIMA: and focus on the silk and the silkworms
3 - Two figures sit in the grass, the right figure (Nyima) hidden by a speech bubble. Thulia sits on the right, knees bent and off to one side, focusing their attention on Nyima with sympathy.
THULIA: Is that what you want?
4 - Two handkerchiefs filled with squiggly worms. They are labeled "THULIA DAY 3" and "NYIMA DAY 3". Nyima has gathered significantly more than Thulia.

This workshop will initiate with people from Mexico, Latin America and Europe to strengthen the ties of stop motion and collaboration and, in exchange, education will be provided for free for one Mexican / Latinamerican student for the first ten years also.

Guillermo del Toro, Netflix, and Gobelins have teamed to open a stop-motion studio in Paris. The endeavor shares a kindred spirit with Mexico's El Taller del Chucho, also co-founded by del Toro, and will honor stop-motion legend Mark Gustafson.

The number of times I've heard that what education is has to change because AI! When people say this to me now, I just say, "no." Usually they stop talking for ten seconds because no one is ever telling them no, and that's the whole problem
tedmccormick.bsky.social
The basic structure of so much commentary, some in the guise of academic study, reduces to:

(1) generative AI products are detrimental to the goals of education

(2) therefore, the goals of education must change.

Without the tacit axiom that AI has authority behind it, that just doesn’t follow.

I think what's impressive about TRON is that, visually, it's still so much more interesting than any of it's sequels. It's crazy that they tried update this digital world by making it as 'realistically rendered' as possible. It's a complete misunderstanding of the original's charm.

Independent comics as an industry would barely exist these days without the tireless efforts of Kickstarter's staff behind the scenes. As they advise, keep supporting all the amazing projects you already are, but have their back in the process.

A codified 4-day work week.
We simply want to protect the way we've been working for over 3.5 years. The 4dww has proven benefits, such as increased productivity and improved employee satisfaction. It's part of what makes Kickstarter a special, innovative place to work.
Fair pay for our lowest-paid workers.
We're fighting for livable minimum salaries for roles that are undervalued by the market but crucial to keeping Kickstarter running. We believe none of our workers should struggle to make ends meet. Creators

🌒 It's YDSP Wednesday 🌘

I want to take it slower, but I also want to share my darker work for October, so I think I'll continue weekly posting just for this month.

I can't explain what this piece is about yet, so you'll have to wait for the VN to come out.

I think this is half the goal of AI for those seeking a post-truth order. Yes, they can produce fake evidence against people they don’t like, but probably more importantly they can dismiss actual evidence against them as being fake.

In all seriousness, publishers are going to have to figure out how to market books in the post-social-media landscape. That should be an implicit part of their job. What authors/artists can do on their own is increasingly limited and siloed.

Drawing + designing the cover for an imaginary literary thriller (a chance to look pretty, an opportunity to be spooky)
Photo of an imaginary book cover for a novel titled “Big Fig Wasp.” The cover art depicts a "main character,” which is a self-portrait of myself femme presenting, and dolled up with ribbons and jewelry and sitting on an iridescent pedestal while a mysterious, color-chromatic webbed-hole emerges from my torso as my gloved hand pulls it open. A shadow figure wrapped by a glowing dragon-creature is coming into being in an ornate mirror behind me in the top right corner. At the bottom-left foot of the pedestal if a black-panther dressed in an ornamental harness. Flower decorations and ornament patterns accent the bottom and other corners of the cover. The type is painted in iridescent colors and come in and out of focus.
