So much about politics can be summed up by the answers to two questions:

Who is allowed to be a bully?

And who is allowed to defend themselves?

I was extremely naive in my twenties and early thirties, took people very much at their word when it came to values, and absolutely destroyed my mental health (and my career) thinking I could publicly demand accountability and survive it whole.

(1/?)
the Epstein files make it very clear why the MeToo backlash was so extreme and why so much of elite society preferred Donald Trump ruling us like a king to the barest hint of accountability

This is our culture.

Epstein isn't a freak exception, his elite friends aren't exceptions.

He, and they, are a mirror.

That's all.

This is our culture.

It is rape culture, but also more broadly it is abuse and exploitation culture.

It is pervasive and it is the reason my career was wrecked and it is the reason Trump is president and it is the reason armed state abusers feel justified executing a mouthy woman in the street.

You can say "typical anarchists," "typical Dems," "typical Bernie bros," whatever.

But I am telling you that actually, this is just the reality across the board.

You insist on accountability as a woman, let's hope you have a day job.

Anyway, if you want to know why we live in the world we do, it has a lot to do with the fact that we live in a culture that is structured and predisposed across the board to protect privileged people and specifically white cis men who leverage abuse for gain or pleasure.

death from disease in concentration camps is so widespread and so predictable that it's pretty clearly a feature, not a bug.

U.S. CBP & Border Patrol were not part of ICE before this fascist regime recruited them for tactical ICE operations. ICE meant Immigration & Criminal Enforcement, like detectives. DHS renamed those investigators (HSI)-Homeland Security Investigators.

DHS then created a militia & called it ICE.

I can’t stress this enough. The state of 4th Amendment law is that the cops can’t force you to type in a passcode but they can force you to swipe your finger or present your face. Never stop using passcodes/passwords to unlock your devices. And consider additional code to unlock Signal.
The FBI was able to access Washington Post reporter Hannah Natanson's Signal messages because she used Signal on her work laptop. The laptop accepted Touch ID for authentication, meaning the agents were allowed to require her to unlock it. storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...

This is how CBP has acted along the southern border for years. And it’s precisely because of their track record that CBP leadership is running these operations. Like @absurdistwords.bsky.social said, racism is just fascism that hasn’t reached you yet.
This is just insane. It’s only a matter of time before DHS kills another innocent person here.

there’s been an assumption that when Dems take power again they will keep ICE funded at these ridiculous levels forever and they are now on record voting to end that

they’ll need to go much further than that but it’s a start - and I sure don’t see the politics of ICE improving between now and then
👀 Every Senate Democrat + Collins and Murkowski just voted for the Bernie Sanders amendment to repeal the $75 billion in additional ICE funding under Trump’s “big beautiful bill.” The measure failed 49-51.

To be clear, we're in such bad shape because the U.S. regime has been a detention regime for a very long time. Now the long-term crisis is getting exponentially worse, with funding already allocated to do incalculable harm. But not all the necessary materials are at hand yet, and we can still act.

I understand it's hard for some to use the term concentration camp, even for those horrified by what's happening. And there are settings (e.g., court) where it may not be helpful today. The key thing to realize is that there's an arc of how detention regimes tend to go, and we're recognizably on it.

We've built an organization designed to inflict horrible suffering on the otherwise innocent. Not caring what happens to those innocents is part of how the people in the institutions inoculate themselves against any lingering ethical qualms. It all gets rationalized away.

what’s astounding about this is not only the incredible cruelty but the complete lack of even the most basic public relations instincts

they kidnap a five year old and generate national outrage and rather than do some basic window dressing to treat him nice while abusing everyone else they do this
