I realise I'm just a freak, but living in a multicultural city is the best thing of all time, it's just the best possible human experience and i can not understand why anyone on earth would be like "weve got to destroy this"

Hope during these dark days
I wrote this poem as an homage to Baldwin and to hear it being sung across the world or read in protests has been my own guiding light of hope.

In my 2nd half US history class, I assign 3 documentaries covering protests (that some would call riots) in US history. The first is HBO's Triangle: Remembering the Fire. It's an amazing film that uses descendants of those affected by the fire to make their stories more real to modern students. 🗃️

Best TikTok thing going is the two dudes trying food from every country without leaving NYC. If you haven’t seen them yet, it’s incredible. My favorite so far is last week’s. Legit got me emotional.

Charles "Checker" Tomkins was a Cree code-talker from Alberta, tasked with translating coded messages during the Second World War.
He kept his oath of secrecy until near the end of his life.
For his service, he received little recognition.
This is his story.

Vera looked around the room. Not another chicken anywhere. And then it struck her—this was a hay bar.

It's New Year, so time to look back and forward. These are 10 things I think we need to recognise in 2026. It’s a response to what I think are profoundly damaging mistaken assumptions I’ve heard and read from practitioners, journalists, and analysts in 2025. Warning: very long🧵

Just like every year, a friendly PSA:

“Feliz ano nuevo” means “happy new anus.”

“Feliz año nuevo” means “happy new year.”

Wishing folks either one is nice, but make sure you’re using the one you mean.

In rural Bihar (one of India's poorest states) I crashed my Enfield head on into another motorcycle when the driver pulled out suddenly while talking over his shoulder to a man at the side of the road.

I only had minor scratches and bruises, thankfully, but the front end of my bike was totaled.
I would like to hear about a time someone, a stranger even, was very kind to you without any prompting, ulterior motive, or strings attached.

1995, studying in Prague for a year. I went to Bucharest by myself, fully intending to shell out for a hotel since there wasn’t a lot of backpacker-level tourist infrastructure yet. Showed up to the hotel to check in & the desk clerk took one look at me and said “You can’t stay here.”

Fun math fact: if you spend $1 every second you'll go through $1M in eleven or twelve days. At the same burn rate it'd take more than 31 years to spend $1B
If people could just intuitively understand the difference between a million, a billion, and a trillion, we’d all be better off.

That applies to dollars. To tons of carbon. And so on.

Math. It matters.

Tonight Stekkjastaur, the first of Iceland's 13 Yule Lads, comes down from the mountains. He likes to sneak into the sheep shed to drink milk from the ewes.

All the children put a shoe in the window for him to put a treat or a little gift in – if they have been good! The bad children get a potato.
