If Putin had installed a president completely obedient to him and ordered him to kill the country, nothing would be different from what Trump did this past week.
The state’s promise of more or less just and effective criminal prosecution of homicide is the compensation for abandoning blood feuds / revenge killings. If the promise is broken, the result will be so ugly.

These numbers are not surprising to me having covered it, but it is stark seeing it laid out like this and I’m glad the Times put this together.

Just this week, someone told me they wished I would stop including the appointing president in stories, and I was like, “Not a chance.” This is why.
Trump's appellate judges have formed a nearly united phalanx to defend his agenda from legal challenges. How often they ruled for him in 2025:

Trump appointees: 92%
Other Republican appointees: 68%
Democratic appointees: 27%

It is impossible to overstate the degree to which the entire national political media's coverage of the 2024 presidential campaign, especially once Harris won the nomination, was deeply, fundamentally, shamefully unserious about the stakes & the candidates.
I can still recall all the tut-tutting from the media when Harris made this argument.
Kamala Harris at her closing campaign rally:

"Donald Trump intends to use the United States Military against American citizens who simply disagree with him."

i mean i think a world where the US genuinely break NATO and launch an invasion of Greenland looks so alien to us that we will not be able to understand it
The thing I think folks struggle to appreciate with this stuff tho is however hard it is to wean Europe off US tech is *at least as hard* as it will be for US tech to get back into Europe after that type of transition kicks into high gear

I have some congresspeople who follow me, so I'll just throw this out there:

As a taxpayer, I would actually prefer that you *not* continue to fund the fascist military machine that is being used to kill and kidnap people from our communities.

The primary mechanism by which Gamergate shaped political outcomes was by proving, and essentially creating, a particular kind market for right wing agitprop that spread like wildfire. It turned certain people into hated icons across new media.
It's a real canary in the coal mine moment for the future of socio-politics in the online era too.

Sarkeesian and Quinn went from relative unknowns to hate figures overnight for the audacity of engaging with games as an art form while being women, all coordinated via online message board.

As it has been from the very start, the problem with Trump, the secret key to his power and the reason he’s going to get us all killed, is the enormous chunk of society that understands he is criminal, a fool, a brute, and deranged, but will not say so because they perceive him as rich and powerful

The agent responds, "Have you all not learned from the past couple of days?"

"Learned what?" she asks

Then he knocks her phone out of her hand

Even without a policy violation, I don’t understand what threat he can claim he was eliminating by killing her. No one was in front of the car when he shot her and she was heading away from them.

I don’t understand what the explanation is for how shooting the driver at point blank range was supposed to protect him or anyone else from her car.
