Kanashimi had made a similar proclamation upon their first meeting, and their bond had flourished naturally since, so the Priestess of Shadows did not pursue or call out to the demon as he disappeared into his talisman in a burst of flame and smoke. Instead, a satisfied smirk tugged at the corner of her lips at the thought of it; getting Saigai, the Demon of Disaster and Wrath, to trust her would be a challenge with immense reward

They wouldn’t need to kill them, after all, just delay them while the others claimed their prize. Though, if the most practical way to accomplish that was by slitting his throat, he doubted that they would hesitate.
Av’ry turned to face his adversary, holding his two gloved fists closed near his chin. He left his sword sheathed; it would likely be ineffective in this situation anyway. He was passable with a blade, but he wasn’t good enough to square off with a trained assassin.
“I am not here for a fist fight,” the Scorpion taunted, moving until he was just beyond arm’s reach. “Did you think I would get close enough for you to hit me?”
“No,” Av’ry admitted. “But I did figure you would get close enough for me to do this.” He opened his palm and blew a fistful of powder into the man’s face.
The assassin blinked in surprise, coughing and trying to brush the dust from his eyes. There was always a brief delay before the screaming started.
Av’ry had been told the sensation was very unpleasant; he hadn’t ever felt the need to try it for himself.

“Well, I’m not sure it’s a favour, as such.” He wasn’t sure the word ‘perspicacious’ meant what the Uncle thought it meant, but he, wisely, did not bring attention to it. “But I just wondered if my carriage wasn’t being a problem? For other guests? It’s rather big, you see, an old model, and I’ve been meaning to get a newer one, but …”

I've edited this scene like over and over, but anyway as a treat from one of the later chapters of The Value of a Heartbeat from my edited draft:

“Emyr! Garrin’bo!” Reilyn grabbed Garrin’s arm. “Just tell her you surrender!” Tears welled in his eyes, “I can’t watch you die too!”

“Then close your eyes!” Garrin shoved Reilyn to the ground, gritting his teeth he ran forward, his thigh burning as the arrowhead tore into his flesh, the wind tearing into his face and arms; though blood streamed down his face, he continued onward. “Stop hiding behind your spells, fucking cowards!” He made a wide, blind slice as he advanced to the edge of the winds and the symmetrical, nausea inducing, swirling trees.

The large man’s axe caught three Eyll fighters. The illusion of identical trees shattered away as the spellcaster wailed and grabbed his abdomen, crimson running though his fingers. The other clenched her hand around her arm, muscle and bone exposed as her blood splattered on the ground. The third dropped his bow and arrow, stepping back, his hands sliced so open that the delicate bones in them had snapped.

The mysterious Eyll woman raised her bow, her windstorm still strong and twisting around the area. “So you’re choosing to make this difficult. I see.”

A description of Takyu-city, from that time Peaches (here called Felli) and Grilled went there

Everywhere one looked, the vertical script of Takyu-shi, a language completely unrelated to any other, was everywhere—signs indicating the purpose of a building, advertisements, public notices. None of those signs provided translations into other languages, unlike some of the signs he’d seen around the inn. Grilled understood deep in his soul that Takyu City had been made for Takyufon and if he didn’t know their language, culture, and customs, he was not welcome.
Felli skated to a metal bench with a fuel pump. Grilled had learned to recognize them. Takyufon could insert a nozzle into an orifice near their hips which would pump a foul-smelling oil into their refining bones, where that oil was turned into the fuel needed to make them skate at hyperspeed.

Fox changes the most in growing to trust herself more, beginning to work through some past trauma and use the power she has available.

However, she also feels even more responsible for the fates of those around her, often to an unhealthy degree, so two steps forward, one step back.

Av'ry, on the other hand learns to be more emotionally honest and available to the people around him. Not just using superficial charm to dodge real connection.

Also, he is beginning to accept that he can't save Fox from herself, only support her in the decisions she makes.
