Just finished rereading Dogs of War by @aptshadow.bsky.social after recommending it to a friend. WOW! Sometimes knowing the shape of a story diminishes the enjoyment but I think I liked it even more the second time. I listened to the audiobook this time and it was superb. Rex was a Good Dog.

So I just started Hungry Gods by @aptshadow.bsky.social & told my teen there are 'Rabbit People' & since it's Tchaikovsky, I don't know yet whether this is some sort of tribal affiliation reference, or if they're going to turn out to be ACTUAL rabbit people.

Teen: it's probably just spiders.

I knew from the very first paragraph that I was going to love Bee Speaker by @aptshadow.bsky.social and it did not disappoint. In fact, it was even better than I expected. I just love how Tchaikovsky explores non-human sentience. It is my favorite thing.

something I say about my exercise game Zombies, Run! is: try to make your physical fitness product something that will remain fun even if you're not improving. even if eg you have a longterm degenerative condition that means your physical fitness slowly gets worse.

because, you know, we all do.
Sen. Tammy Duckworth just said on Colbert, "We should all live long enough to develop a disability," & the audience laughed uncomfortably.

I can tell you what they were thinking. It was "Not me. That would never happen to me."

& the underlying, unacknowlged premise was "b/c I'm better than that."

A friend just asked me what I do to stay hopeful and I told him one of my favorite strategies…I stay hopeful by remembering that no one has any idea what the fuck is going to happen, so as long as we don’t know, we gotta do what we can.

I hate everything about this.
OpenAI is using Studio Ghibli-style memes as an ad hoc promotional campaign for its new image generator—despite Ghibli founder Hayao Miyazaki's famous hatred of AI. Sam Altman made his X avatar a 'Ghiblified' portrait.

Disgracing Miyazaki is part of the point: It's more proof to them tech has won.
OpenAI's Studio Ghibli meme factory is an insult to art itself
Sam Altman is promoting his new image generator by appropriating the work of one of the greatest living animators—who is "disgusted" by AI.

On the other site, Studio Ghibli-style AI output is going viral and allow me to just say it is profoundly depressing to see that stuff being used to promote OpenAI's latest product. Miyazaki famously called AI-produced art "an insult to life itself"—and this in turn is an insult to him.

They’re throwing away a cure for cancer.
Exclusive: NIH officials have advised scientists to remove reference to mRNA vaccines from their grant applications, in expectation the Trump administration intends to abandon most research in the field.
