Happening now: several hundred people are pouring into Chicago's downtown Federal Plaza.

It's 25 degrees outside.

Organizers are leading the crowd in a chant of, "no boots on the ground, no bombs in the air!"

Two protesters hold a large banner reading, "no war for Venezuela oil."

This thread is keeping track of misinformation circulating about the US' attack on Venezuela. A must read!
THREAD: I'll fact-check all the viral misinformation about the US military operation in Venezuela in this thread

This image, purporting to show the US military arresting Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, is AI-generated.

According to Google's SynthID detector, it was created using Google AI.

Hi! Have you stretched today? Gone outside for a walk? Backed up your phone or computer recently?

I know the news is stressful, but you still deserve time to take care of yourself. Try to focus on the things in your control. One thing at a time.

there will be a push to recruit young ppl. it will come to ppl whose families have been stamped into poverty beneath the boot heels of billionaires with promises of "a way out." education, travel, money. temptation will come from inside their own schools; make sure they have the tools to resist it.

Safer for people on foot and doesn't impact traffic? This should be done everywhere. If they haven't implemented the Idaho stop, they should also let bikes go on the pedestrian light.
Giving pedestrians a head start on vehicles improves safety, has no effect on traffic, Winnipeg finds
City staff are working to expand pedestrian head starts to locations further from the core.

Some ideas for improving road safety that can be implemented in US cities without modifying infrastructure:

• No cars moving through the intersection when pedestrians have a "walk" signal.

• No turn on red.

• 20 mph speed limit.

• Leading pedestrian interval for cyclists.

Never trust people who want to “de-politicize,” climate change. This has always been true but especially now. They will try to trick you into thinking they are the adults in the room but they are either disqualifyingly naive or in the pocket of fossil fuel interests.

"No, guess he should've complied," agent says.

So I am going to say something about romance as a genre.

A lot of people think that romance is ignorable because <insert thing they think about romance> and romance authors don't count because <insert thing they think about romance>.

This thread is not about whether you have to like romance.

This is like one of those background details in an apocalyptic/dystopian story that occurs when the plot begins.
This is WILD.

Power goes out in San Francisco and the robot cars, needing the lights to "self" drive, all stop at once, blocking streets and emergency vehicles - which are needed more than ever in a black out!

We knew AI causes power outages. Turns out it also makes them worse by being stupid.
Waymo has halted service in San Francisco after numerous videos & images showed its autonomous cars snarling traffic during the blackout.

With traffic lights down, Waymos across the city stopped dead in their tracks at intersections.

Generative AI is also causing me more work as a college professor, in teaching, research, and admin work.
So far AI is causing me more work.

One of my main responsibilities is to use a database to find certain things. This database used to have humans look at the webpage of a thing and then write a description.

Bad AI descriptions have led to an increase in false positives I need to sift through.

I lived thru the end of public smoking. Early in my career I presented to city councils who were smoking, in front of audiences who were smoking.

Smoking in restaurants, airplanes, hospitals…

All of that seems insane now, but it was very controversial when we DID change it.

We CAN change things.
It’s crazy that people used to be able to just smoke cigarettes wherever they wanted
