If you're a writer, wondering why you should bother writing with the world on fire. It feels like it's not important, I need you to understand that it is.

Even if it is just because it keeps you moving forward? Even if it only brings YOU joy, that gives you energy to fight & survive.

Art and writing is a form of protest. It is a form of empowerment. It is part of being human.

That is why you write when the world is on fire.

But the bigger reason that you should write and make art, is that your work is someone else's respite.

You don't know who they are. They may be someone in the future. But if you have escaped into a book, or a painting, or a TV show... Someone created that.

You can do that for someone else.

I come to you all with a request for community help: I'm a US/Latvian dual citizen (through my family) and I need to renew my Latvian passport ASAP (I live in the UK as a leave-to-remain EU citizen). All the paperwork is in Latvian though, and I need someone who can read the language to help me out.

This is very important.

If you're giving rides to people or dropping off groceries, as best as you can, don't use DMs and SMS (texting). If you can connect via Signal that's ideal. If giving rides, don't put someone's exact address into your GPS. Navigate to a nearby landmark and verbally confirm.
Do NOT give people home or business addresses in Bluesky DMs. Bluesky DMs are not currently encrypted.

You should only do that in Signal.

Pssst: Because of your support for indies & love for audiobooks, we were able to pay our bookshop partners 80% more in 2025 than the prior year❗

We also became a B Corp, fought book bans, raised $55k for libraries, launched a web player (y'all LOVE listening at work), & more—all because of you.

Hey, a note as we head into a new week:

Hope is never misplaced and never wrong. Having hope for something means you haven't given into despair. Despair is what they are trying to create so that you give up.

But as long as we have hope for a better world, they cannot crush us.
