Nah. A lot of this research can't stand on its own as a contribution to mathematics *or* physics and it doesn't, in fact, help someone else make an elegant model. There are entire branches of it, particularly in the quantum gravity genre, that are less than useless.

Hold up. The phenomenon of entire research groups going down rabbit holes of arbitrarily chosen parameters and cranking out papers about that *is* an industry of useless papers. It's arguing how many angels dance on the tip of a pin, but in a language of differential equations.

Back around 2017 I was explaining to someone in Polish the reports of ICE picking people out in the streets based on their perceived ethnicity, and caught myself using the word "łapanka." That's when it dawned on me that some 11 million ppl in the US were living under early-Nazi conditions.
