As I was explaining to someone, how on earth is your teen supposed to responsibly handle a change from "no internet" to "internet" as they turn 18?
A lot of people who ban the internet are just hoping to not deal with the problem as opposed to talking about safety, content issues etc
Society either treats teens as precious innocents who should know nothing of the adult world (when it comes to banning books and internet access) or as grown adults, but only in the context of criminalizing or sexualizing them.

Not so related to the commentary itself per se, but the image made me suddenly realize how Darmok, yes, the TNG episode, is actually, from Picard's perspective, a pretty solid metaphor for autistic people trying to communicate with allistics.
Is this a thing people think? That asking WTF you are talking about when you can't string together words to actually say what you mean makes others autistic? No, friend, it makes you an inarticulate dope.

A *million* people.

Lawn darts were banned forever in Canada after like 50 people got injured.

Any company not run by absolute ghouls would shut this thing down. Governments should be banning the fuck out of it.
Panera’s moderately caffeinated lemonade was loosely associated with 2 deaths before it was taken off market.

This article alone has 4 examples of ChatGPT encouraging young people to commit suicide, and OpenAI’s own public stats estimate over a million users discuss suicide with ChatGPT each week.
I fully believe in the corporate death penalty and believe we would be a better world if OpenAI lost its corporate charter and was forcibly dissolved.

virtue signalling is good actually
Performative decency is actually *so* important for this reason.

It tricks the 10% of ghouls into thinking that there are only 1% of ghouls.

And it makes the 30% of people that don't care one way or another follow the mostly decent crowd

people hate hearing this but it's 100% true, creating a huge pay gap between political leaders, their staffs, and other elites is a recipe for corruption. of course the flip side of that is taxes on the rich should be jacked way the hell up
The Mayor of New York only makes $260k. I bet there are police that make more than that in NY with overtime.

We need to pay elected leaders more money and stop pretending it's some sort of calling. They're managing hundreds of billions of dollars in investments and millions of people's lives.

“Just” friends, as if friendship could ever be just anything. As if it doesn’t run soul deep, carved into bone like initials on a tree. As if it doesn’t have the power to save you or bring you down to your knees.

The discussion of the essential role of the Spiritual and Numinous In Gothic Horror in the Gothic Horror panel at #CanCon2025 was a real needle scratch realization moment on how that also applies to early fantasy and (much like in horror) has in many ways been displaced by materialist concerns.

An part of knowing me is knowing I basically forced my mother's hand in teaching me how to read well before school (against conventional wisdom of the time).

A more important part of knowing me is knowing why I did it. Not story books, encyclopedias, fact books, no.

I wanted to read maps.

Happy Canadian Thanksgiving!

(Not to be confused with our own holiday dedicated to indigenous people (two weeks ago), or a day dedicated to a wayward genoese genocider (we don't do that), or any thanksgiving involving Settlers being fed by indigenous people (another country, weeks from now)

I've tried most every variant. My characters are too smart. If I have an outline, they will figure out to outsmart it and avoid adventure, If I don't have an outline, I won't figure out how to outsmart them, and they'll avoid adventure.
Okay #WritingCommunity

Planners and Pantsers. Have you ever tried the opposite approach? Planners, have you ever just writtem with no plan? What happened. Pantsers, have you ever tried outlining? What happened?

Was there anything you kept from this experiment.

I switched from pantser to planner.

I feel like if you are making this ridiculous argument that hating AI is essentially racism you have utterly failed to absorb the idea that people are not things.

It's ok for me to say that these chips are bad and should be set on fire. It's not ok for me to say that about a person. FFS.

Weirdly, I don’t write my characters speaking in middle or early modern english (or Simlish!), because I’m a 21st century real world writer communicating with 21st century real world readers. Translation convention exists for a reason.

This applies to that too.
we dunk on the concept of historical and fantasy characters somehow having a perfect understanding of bdsm safety protocols but i think we also need to free ourselves of putting modern terms for gender and sexuality in the mouths of characters who would've never seen a pineapple.

Separating from OP because I don't disagree with tjhe premise, but "you don't get to chose to fight when they're punching you" is not, in fact, good warfighting mentality.

Knowing when to avoid and get out of fights, even if the enemy is already hitting, is a huge part of winning wars.
