[about to leave the room completely satisfied my investigation is finished] There's just one more thing. You just said the telephone book was stolen. Stolen from whom?
All my brothers now have these "one pedal driving" cars and the last time we got together they had to explain it to me 20 different ways. "What do you do if you want the car to stop, though?"

December 2nd marks the day John Brown was granted martyrdom in the great abolitionist cause.

His epitaph read:
I have fought a good fight.
I have finished my course.
I have kept the faith.

I like to say that becoming a conservative activist is engaging in politics on easy mode, but of course there's a perfectly reasonable response that while the work is easy and the pay is great, you do have to give up your dignity and the respect of people you admire, which isn't nothing.

I think my main takeaway from the high seas murders isn't whether the people involved agree or disagree with the policy or what they think the laws of war "really" require but the belief (right or, hopefully, wrong!) that the fascist coup will triumph, at least over any timeframe relevant to them.

Senator Kelly is correct.

Plus a Public Service Announcement:

KEY section of Department of Defense's Law of War Manual is 18.3.2.1.

The VERY rule on the "requirement" to refuse illegal orders gives as its paradigmatic example of what is "clearly illegal:
"orders to fire upon the shipwrecked."

“During days of torture and abuse, an Israeli soldier carved a Star of David into Ahmad’s back with a knife. Another soldier carved a smiley face into Nadia’s father’s neck.”

This happened *at a university* in Gaza.

And yet our institutions still collaborate with Israeli schools.

Besides the idiotic slogan and the policy vacuity, the core problem with "strong floor, no ceiling" is that there is no state or congressional district where a coalition of the poor and the rich can outvote the middle class when you include retirees, who have both a hard floor and hard ceiling.

Back in the Arena and gives me some pleasure to report the volleyball cheer section has a MUCH more sophisticated set of cheers than the basketball team. Also it's snowing so

This is fine and good as a response to the present crisis but these are the *exact same words* that people complained about Times journalists using when they objected to Tom Cotton's "No Quarter" column during the George Floyd Uprising.
How low we have sunk as a country. The US Department of Defense is now run by a rabid war criminal.

Ordering the execution of helpless survivors of an attack is ALWAYS a war crime, whether they civilian or military.

Pure, mindless, barbarism.

What can you say but that I'm glad my kids will grow up after this entire economy has been incinerated. I'll teach them to read by rubbing ash onto animal skins as God intended
An issue we're seeing at all levels of university is that many students are simply refusing to do *anything*. They aren't reading the syllabus, aren't following assignment guidelines, aren't engaging with material, ignoring deadlines. And this might seem like old news, but it truly has ramped up.

Kinda funny to refer to an OLC opinion as "immunizing" someone's conduct from prosecution. Immunizing from whom? Netanyahu is "immune" from prosecution as long as he doesn't set foot in the law-abiding countries of Europe too but that's a funny way of considering yourself "immune."
Ed Whelan was Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General for OLC from 2001-2004, so when he suggests that laws of war have been violated by the executive branch, that’s… something
Does Pete Hegseth have a "golden shield" against prosecution in the form of a DOJ OLC opinion? Ed Whelan thinks not.

For my sins I have a lot of digital and paper subscriptions but the Onion is the most unexpectedly wonderful one whenever it shows up in the mail
Here's a note I sent to our members about what we did with their money, and why we expect the Onion to outgrow the Washington Post.

We keep doing weird, hard shit — taunting ICE, yelling at Congress for not taunting ICE, buying bad websites — when nobody else does.

Our members keep getting papers.
