Nine years ago today I saw a BIG rock in Mexico that even had wispy steam emission from its summit, so you could say that was a good day.
A rare clear view of the summit of Popocatépetl, a volcano near Mexico City. Before a dark foreground of pine, the steep, rocky sides of the volcano are bright white with snow and ice as the sun shines on it. As the view is straight on from ground-level, you cannot see the crater at its summit, but white wispy clouds of water vapor rise from it.

How is the new Ranma 1/2? I've been meaning to check it out, but I've also mean meaning to check out 219 different things (conservative estimate).

I never watched the old anime, but I loved the manga back in the day!

I hate that, for a moment, I thought this was a real quote from the clip.

(...it's not, right???)

Did you know that Earth's most & 2nd most powerful/explosive #volcanic #eruptions of the century were submarine? We are discussing both the 2022 Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai (pictured) & the 2012 Havre eruptions, both in the Kingdom of Tonga, this week in my Submarine volcanoes course at #URIGSO 🧪🌋🌊
Two true color satellite views of the rising and spreading tephra plume from the 2022 Hunga Tonga-Hunga Haʻapai eruption, from the geostationary satellite GOES-West. (a) Aerial emission linked with the volcanic activity on 13 January; (b) Ash plume emitted during the main eruption on 15 January. Red lines depict the coastline and the yellow triangle depicts the position of the HTHH volcano. A discerning person might ask why there was an anti-fascist movement in the Weimar Republic.
paleofuture.bsky.social
"Antifa has been around in various iterations for almost 100 years in some instances, going back to the Weimar Republic in Germany."

- Jack Posobiec at Trump's roundtable on antifa

I'd agree regarding St. Louis!
gabeeggers.bsky.social
Ozarks extends a little far northeast in my experience, but I appreciate the nuance in this chart. But it really captures how the area where I grew up (~100 miles south of St. Louis along the river) was a crossroads in many ways.

I'd love to see the methodology in making this, though!

This is the most accurate depiction of the Midwest to date. Wichita has always felt like the last Midwest city while also being the first plains city.

Your aperiodic reminder that this is the true scale of Saturn's moon Enceladus and the biggest volcano in the Solar System, Olympus Mons on Mars.
gabeeggers.bsky.social
I was reading a book this morning, and it analogized the size of Enceladus as being ~ the distance between Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. I knew it was small among the moons that are talked about regularly, but I don't think I ever realized it was that small.

Y'all, I know I don't do as much Earth remote sensing, but Landsat truly is a beautiful and important program.
Landsat 9 satellite image (path 23, row 43) acquired on September 29, 2025. It shows a green, forested expanse with brown fields to the south. Two thin, dark blue rivers join together into one. A few spots of white clouds are seen.

The scene is southeastern Missouri (and southern Illinois and western Kentucky) where I grew up!

Call me crazy, but if people were questioning my mental competence and whether I was just a figurehead who's completely out of it...

...I wouldn't post a song saying that Russ Vought wields, "the pen, the funds, and the brain."

"We are the champions, my friends,
And we'll keep on fighting 'til the end!"

Congratulations, #Kyanite! I've been voting for this mineral since its first-round victory over diamond in 2017, and I'm ecstatic that it finally gets the laurels it deserves! #MinCup25

Congratulations, #Kyanite!

After eight years of competing, another few hours to verify votes was nothing, right?

Amazing first run, #Tugtupite, and better luck next year.

Alright - I’ve been pretty quiet this #MinCup25 but now that it’s down to the final hour (or so), I have a story to share, in favor of #kyanite
It’s about geology, field camp, and the kind of learning that happens despite difficulty, and because of great TAs.

This is a wonderful story! Thank you for sharing it.
