Yeah, it turns out to be less of a factor than I expected even for the 19th century. One 1848 source has labourers in Bethnal Green spending roughly 30-33% of their average wage in rent for two rooms - the citing book notes explicitly that is a price level which effectively precludes saving

We could build housing a lot more cheaply if we rolled back two centuries in regulation of sanitation, heating, structural integrity, building material etc...

It's just that that regulation tends to exist for very good reasons

I don't have statistics, but something to keep in mind is that housing is *much* more regulated, and housing standards are astronomically higher in developed countries nowadays than they would have been around, say, 1800. Many poor people lived in what we would call slums nowadays

#UK #TransRights An FOI has just confirmed what all of us have feared: for the Youth gender services, since July 2024, not a single patient has been referred to commence HRT. And 22 have been moved from youth to adult services , also without treatment. This is scandalous.

Not to mention that a ton of pastoralist societies were (and presumably still are) substantially dependent on goods exchange with their 'settled' neighbours, because animal husbandry alone doesn't provide you with all the stuff (including foodstuffs!) necessary for life

Bonaparte has a positive legacy primarily insofar as most of his negative aspects (tyrannical rule, trying to put his family in charge everywhere) were eventually squashed by the victorious Allies, while they didn't manage to fully destroy his more positive ones (e.g. the civil code)

It is hardly the point but a) trans people existed in Medieval Europe, b) lots of currencies were used in Medieval Europe, not just gold, which was in fact uncommon, c) alchemy was a lot more common in early modern Europe, d) women are not a commodity you absolute weapons????
