All I have to say about the Nuzzi profile is that at the end of it she jokes about how she destroyed her life. In fact she did not do that. She has a book, a magazine job, this lovely profile. People’s lives are being destroyed by this administration, however, including by -well, you know.

I think we have to start seriously reckoning with the idea that the "elite" class are some of the least elite people on the planet...and the rest of us are at their mercy.
What in the dilapidated fuck

does this look like extremely buttoned down responsible journalism to you? or does it look like something else. and not in service of cutting corners to get a massive scoop
NYT editors put "Claudine Gay" in "top 5 featured on the New York Times homepage Dec 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 17, 22, 25"

(While they put Trump calling for Constitution's "termination" on page 15 and his chief of staff's "tyrant" warning on 12)

Christopher Rufo openly bragged about the plans!
Chris Rufo "a total product of right-wing affirmative action and you literally would never have heard of him if he was a liberal"

NYT front page coverage all the time!

By powerful, mediocre editors who push "meritocracy" narrative yet hired each other with legacy privilege

here at the Paper of Record, when an open white supremacist leaks someone's college application in an attempt to imply he got unfair race-based special treatment, even though he was rejected, we know what to do: publish it immediately prospect.org/2025/07/09/2...

and that can be true! but then you open the actual newspaper and it's soft-focus profiles of Chris Rufo, a frenzied transphobic crusade, an all-out effort to get the first Black woman president of Harvard canned over bullshit, Get Zohran, etc etc

This part. It's wild that people like Larry Summers and Ken Starr used their personal emails with their WHOLE GOVERNMENT NAMES to communicate with a convicted pedophile. I don't even put slightly critical comments about coworkers in emails...?
Look I've done a lot of tough reporting on Hollywood (and sometimes leaked emails have been my friend) but at least a percentage of industry people know not to send an email that boils down to "hey I had a fun time doing horrific crimes with you, want to circle back and do more crimes next week y/n"

My newsletter for Assigned went out a little over an hour ago. It was a dissection of the position NYT is in currently, with a reputation in flux between its past as the most serious, respectable, elite paper in America and its present as the paper that asked Ms. Rachel if she was paid by Hamas.
Friendly reminder that the NYT asked Ms Rachel if she was paid by Hamas.
As a former member of NYT’s finance team & the co-author of this story exposing the relationship between Epstein & Bill Gates as well as one on Epstein & JPMorgan, I am really frustrated to see people claiming that NYT sat on publishable info about Trump and Epstein 🧵 www.nytimes.com/2019/10/12/b...

Yep. Some go into journalism to have access to power, to be power's handmaiden & PR. Others go into journalism to question & illuminate the operation of power & how some norms/systems hurt the powerless. Wolff just 1 of many examples showing--again--the former is very common& usu far more lucrative.
Aside from every other repulsive thing about these Epstein emails, they offer direct confirmation of Michael Wolff as one of the sketchiest creeps in a teeming universe of gross behavior

I mean, yeah. But Trump was convicted of sexual assault, bragged about sexual assault, was convicted of fraud, etc, etc and ppl still elected him to be the president of these United States so maybe we’re dealing with a more systemic problem is all I’m saying
"Convicted pedophile Jeffrey Epstein" is a phrase that first appeared in newspapers in March 2011 and appeared regularly from that point onward. it is INCONCEIVABLE to me that this many people were still associating with him!!

A minor point. In the emails I've seen Epstein writes in simple but messy, hard to follow language. Not the sort to wax philosophical on parallels between himself and Gulliver, you know?

So...how did this quote come to be, I wonder? It's like Thomas interviewed a completely different person.
Here’s the excruciatingly bad puff piece that former NYT reporter Landon Thomas wrote, shortly after Epstein’s guilty plea in 2008

Have a chronic illness that has been relatively under control for about 20 years. I'm going to lose insurance because the premium is going up to 1600/month. Talked to 2 case managers, both did research and said there will be no affordable options for me. I have no other options.

So I read the book to learn more. I’ll never forget how reading this passage made me feel.

Mafia analogy is helpful—but as always for me the natural comparison is to how our media covers governments in Africa, Asia, Latin America, even Eastern Europe. We have no problem calling the same style of governance corrupt and tyrannical over there...
