The South must even today be reconstructed by policy or progress (as has already happened in much of the South), & either of these will mean giving up something fundamental to the South-that-was, just as air conditioning did.

The South is full of lovely people who mustn't be ignored or forgotten in any progressive politics, morally or strategically. But you cannot separate Jim Crow or voter suppression from the South. The subjugation of black people (& poor whites) under established power & patronage is fundamental.
I understand why a lot of white liberals are like, fuck the south, because they think about the people in power who are mostly white conservatives. But that is only because of Jim Crow, voter suppression, a lack of real funding for Dems there

I’m not saying the only way to have good politics is to hate the South. I love the South. I love my home. But enabling things that have only ever hurt us is not the way forward for the South or for our country. It has to stop.

Black Protestants are the core of the Democratic Party there, full stop. But you don’t get two Dem GA senators and a Dem NC gov without SOME white liberal votes.

This is it, really. In the US, the fact that most people had to drive or be driven an hour or more out of town to get to a casino--or fly to the Casino State--in order to gamble is what's known in design as 'friction.'
It puts a lot of speedbumps between the urge and its satisfaction.

I agree that people who want to gamble should be forced to physically marinate in cigarette smoke and a lingering ambience of body odor and shame to do so
If gambling can’t be banned outright, it should be regulated so you can’t do it online. You should have to do it the old way, go to a dirty storefront in the worst part of town with all the other losers and hand over cash to an old guy with a layer of visible crust all over his skin.
