THREAD: Judge Ellis is the first federal judge to review extensive body cam video of DHS's actions in Chicago. She finds that DHS *repeatedly* misled the public and made claims that were disproven by agents' own videos.

I'll go through some of the most egregious ones here.

Apropos of Judge Jerry Smith, but also applicable to a whole swath of the federal bench currently.
Although we have probably had enough of it by now, it is a good thing to be once again reminded that esteemed members of the bench—people of substance, of letters—can have their brains fricasseed by Facebook just like your uncle with the GED.

The destruction of US science will be felt worldwide for decades. Take it from @msier.bsky.social, who was the lead program director for the Biological Oceanography program at the US National Science Foundation.
I don’t think people understand how wrecked it is or how hard it will be to rebuild.

Whe I try to motivate my students I tell them not to focus on everything. That way lies madness. Instead, find one specific way to make the world better.

This person (whose name is Person!) has found a highly specific and deeply wonderful way to make the world better.

Every “AI replaces cognition” claim seems to come without a single impressive example of that happening at scale in any specifically useful way.
The plow, the steam engine, electricity — all replaced muscle. AI replaces cognition. If you spend your day “reading lots of stuff and turning it into straight English,” well… so does the machine. The goal now is to learn from history and cushion the blow better than last time.

This is very insightful and helpful, at least to me, since I’m on the outside looking in.
I always learn from @davekarpf.bsky.social . His response to the NYT piece on the Sierra Club is very enlightening, not just (or even especially) as media criticism, but more as a discussion of civic associations and progressive advocacy at this moment. open.substack.com/pub/davekarp...

ICE is a team sport for guys who would otherwise be school shooters

I don’t know how many times I’ve watched this video.

I don’t know how we’ve gotten to the point where men in full balaclavas can abduct daycare teachers while they’re watching children.

But I do know that this isn’t sustainable. Abolish ICE. There is no way to reform this.
