I think that a broad diversity of transness and queerness will, over time, obsolete a the third sex/"classic transsexual" category in the cultural lexis. But we are currently in the very earliest stages of that process, so we are seeing a clash of the old understanding with the new reality.

But wider society still tries to apply the third sex lens to us! And so-gay-he-became-a-she is still a legible category in the public mind, but it only includes a subset of trans women. And trans women are raised in that same society and can instinctually turn to those same lenses! It's a mess.

Today, the pressures that used to keep trans lesbians disproportionately closeted are significantly reduced compared to the 80s, so the correlational differences between transhet and trans lesbian lives are shrinking away.

If you're already going to be on the edge of society because you love men and can't convince others you're a straight man, you have a lot less to lose if you become a member of the "third sex."

Surely there are trans lesbians who refuse to live as men in that society, but too few to be legible.

I've talked about this before but it's clear a trans woman's mode of existence in a traditional patriarchal society is heavily influenced by her sexuality. Really, it's determined by "ability to mask and pass as a man," and sexuality is a major element there in a strictly homophobic society.

This is such a good insight. AGP was basically a new "third sex" category that was "needed" because the (modest) reduction in stigma against queerness achieved by the 70s and 80s caused trans women who previously would have stayed closeted and lived as straight men started to come out.

all you have to do is put a few hundred million people in full body suit sensors--that can track the location, weight, and momentum of all of their body parts at all times--and have them go about their entire day every day for a couple years, idk what the problem is !

There is not a social norm that strangers who have consensual casual sex must first disclose that they are married. No one would consider that a deception that vitiates consent.

It's an example of something that you can't assume your partner knows you care about and so you should ask if you care.

It's not a new law, but the wonderful British governing body put out an "interpretation" that a trans person failing to disclose their trans status before sex would be sexual assault or rape under existing laws.

It is truly insane.

Yes! Maybe it's easier to be aware of this because I know I don't think in words, so writing involves this bizarre process where my brain is untangling and rearranging and rotating all of these concepts in ways that I can't even describe. I've tried but can't replicate that process without writing.
