France has ended up in a strange position after using some €250bn of tax-payer money to build a fleet of nuclear power stations. Wind and solar power is merrily entering the French power market at prices nuclear production can't match, resulting in huge surpluses of power.

Also the data doesn't support that there was *ever* a time when there was "large-scale premarital chastity." Historically, premarital and extramarital sex has always been extremely common.

6. Weiss presents her mission at CBS as restoring trust by elevating centrist voices, which is accurate enough if we understand "centrist voices" to mean "the type of men likely to hang out with Jeffrey Epstein."

Maybe not everyone who associated with Jeffrey Epstein after his 2008 conviction raped children. But everybody who associated with him after that knew that he had been convicted of pimping out children *and that wasn't a deal breaker for them.* End every single career after that date.

Bill Gates (who appears to have lied about how much he was connected) admitted, himself, that he knew underage girls were being raped and could offer no explanation why he didn't call the cops. Any sane person knows the reason: loyalty. "Snitches get stitches" applies to the rich and powerful, too.
it’s not necessarily that all these people in the epstein files participated in the raping of girls it’s that none of them cared and if he hadn’t been arrested and died they’d still be out there trying to be his friend

"You can't fight city hall" would be worse. "Just comply and they won't have to hurt you" would be worse than both.

That being said, finding out that the newly hired ex prison guards are quitting in disgust and that it's the ICE lifers doing the worst crimes was, well, not what I expected. Yick.

If you've ever wondered about the difference between Southern Baptists & American Baptists (formerly known as Northern Baptists), the Twin Cities are showing it.
An SBC church has a pastor who's an ICE leader.
An ABC church a block from Pretti's execution is ministering to those terrorized by ICE:
An American Baptist church is 1 block from where Alex Pretti was executed. They're passing out coffee & opened building to people visiting memorial. They had to hold their Sunday service elsewhere & it was powerful joint service with another American Baptist church: wordandway.org/2026/01/26/a...

Do you honestly think people in the civil rights movement and other nonviolent movements faced no violence themselves? They practiced nonviolence because it works, because the oppressor wants a shooting war, which is the war it will win
How's your non-violent working Mr Gandhi stancil? They will kill each and everyone of you right if they had the chance and you will still be writing Kumbaya.
Observers have been working day and night to protect these neighborhoods from ICE, make the streets safe so kids can go to school and people can go to their jobs. Burning down the street undoes all our work. The people setting fires haven’t been putting in long hours watching plates or doors.

You have to read this. Firsthand affidavit from one of the women who was there and recording the video. She talks about how Alex Pretti was directing traffic when she arrived. She watched him be killed in front of her. She's afraid to go home, worried she'll be arrested.

My health policy valentine is to entirely erase all traces of Kaiser Permanente and to salt the earth where their headquarters was, and to erect a monument there to warn the next 40 generations never to let for-profit businesses run health insurance.

Part of the way social media makes people crazy is notifying them of every single damn thing. Turn it all off. Look at the site when you want to. Never, ever allow it to make your phone make noise. Nothing that important is going to happen here.
I turn of all notifications for literally every damn app. My phone only rings out loud if it's someone who's in my phone book and it only beeps at me if I set an alarm or a loved one is texting.
This is a good thread to read. I will only add that I do not get ANY social-media notifications or news alerts on my phone and it is a foundational building block of my sanity that no nonhuman entity, not even Bluesky, gets to initiate conversations with me.

It’s de-escalation. And it’s grounded in the social science of violence. 🧵

When Amy Schalet was interviewing experts for her book _Not Under My Roof_, a Dutch pediatrician told her that in the Netherlands, children are considered to be citizens, so of course they have their own rights.
Today I am once again making loads of new Bluesky friends by insisting on one of my most sincerely held beliefs that makes way too many people fucking furious: that teenagers are autonomous beings who are not their parents' property and who possess independent volition and interiority
