If you pay attention to any large industry long enough and follow it to its logical conclusion you eventually end up sounding like a communist even if you started off testing CPU case fans. youtu.be/cUrJVdF2me0?...

My standard response is "tell me, in specific detail, how exactly I'll be 'left behind,'" and to date not a single techbro has ever answered the question. "You'll be left behind" is a statement of religious faith, not business fact, and should be treated as such.
So the “figure out how to use it lest you be left behind” replies about ‘AI’ that have been popping up here strike me as inauthentic but also kind of funny because they grant the point that rather than an automation panacea these technologies are quite difficult to figure out how to use effectively

There was no "get a smartphone or you'll be left behind" marketing, because smartphones are actually useful.

If your invention is good, you don't have to use that kind of pressure to market it.
It's like all of these hucksters and charlatans aren't actually technologists.

You don't have to threaten people to adopt a technology. If you do, it's worthless. You don't have to say "OH NO. YOU'LL BE LEFT BEHIND!"

It's all a con. People looking to make a ton of money and get out fast.

*laughs in archivist* anyone who thinks it's all been digitized is out of their goddamn mind. We don't have the staff, resources, or digital infrastructure to digitize, store, check, and maintain at preservations standards a digital copy of every single item in our collections.
When we say "no, everything hasn't been digitized," I need you to understand that we really mean is that virtually nothing has been digitized. This is because the realm of primary sources that historians use is incomprehensibly large.
Seems like it's worth posting this one again.

there are, and have been, legitimate procedural and machine learning techs: they handle the work internally in a program/system, and aren't necessarily reliant on the mega-data infrastructures that genAI is infamous for, but slimeballs took up "AI" to lump it together to finesse billions away
If we’re going to get really no quarter about genAI usage, I’m going to need people to learn the difference between AI and genAI real fast.

It was so obvious that none of the jokes the left made about Charlie Kirk’s death would ever be as tasteless and insensitive as what the right would do to honour him lol

Rand Paul trying to make Republicans believe in American Republicanism circa 2008 is like being the Japanese soldier who didn't surrender until the 1970s
Rand Paul on Erika Kirk and Marco Rubio endorsing JD Vance: "I think there needs to be representatives in the GOP who still believe international trade is good, who still believe in free market capitalism, who still believe in low taxes."

Karl: "And that's not JD Vance?"

Paul: "No"

Bible ending explained: Who is Jesus’ father?
This is explained in a long, unmissable scene *halfway through the movie*, not the ending, and then further discussed about a hundred fucking times before said ending. I despise this era of internet

In the dark of December
A beautiful thing
A sweet to remember
"We are closer to Spring
than we were in September."
I heard a bird sing
In the dark of December
Happy Winter Solstice ❄️

Make sure to get outside today, make use of every bit of daylight we have and when the night comes, know that tomorrow will be that little bit lighter 🙌🏻

another example of AI as tracer dye, exposing an already existing problem (and, of course, significantly worsening it)
I think this post nails the actual problem, for researchers at least—AI hallucinations would simply not be a problem in academic work if we’d not normalized citation-as-signaling rather than actual engagement—you can only cite a fake paper if you’re not in the habit of reading the papers you cite
Do not cite an academic paper unless you’ve read it
