Screenwriter (emerging). Former producer (stuff you've heard of like Peep Show). Catless childless cat lady (proud).
Every now and then I encounter someone who clearly went to Eton (or similar) and who I don't mind at all. This is one such occasion.

Though the problem goes deeper than Trump, and his cabinet are unlikely to impeach him, surely it's a moral necessity to try?
Trump has posted on Truth Social about 65 times in the last 90 minutes, including a video he posted at 8:44 PM PT describing election fraud lies that shows racist AI images of Michelle and Barack Obama as monkeys at the end. I’ve confirmed this is real and watched it myself.

Some good news. Here's hoping the UK can also reduce its dependence on US tech companies
France announced today it’s phasing out Teams, Zoom, etc. to be replaced with a French/European solution called Visio. The data is hosted on Outscale. Transcripts and subtitles are also handled by French providers. The target is set on 2027 for government agencies.

This wonderful thread puts me in mind of the book A Paradise Built in Hell by Rebecca Solnit. Most people, in adversity, are capable of great kindness, humanity, and brilliantly effective organization.
I came to Minneapolis to report on what's going on, and one of the main questions I showed up with is "just what is the scale of the resistance?" After all, we're all used to the news calling Portland a "war zone" or whatever when it's just some protests in one part of town.

Minneapolis and Saint Paul have basically mobilized into a war economy of mutual aid and non-violent defense. I’ve never seen anything like it, even during Covid. People who barely vote are guarding their schools from ICE and doing the shopping for neighbors in hiding.
This is so smart. I’m so impressed with all the different ways you’re helping your neighbors.

That last one - disengaging from US companies - is an enormous undertaking. But I don't see that we have an alternative.

Can anyone more knowledgeable than me estimate how long it would take?
I think the only sensible approach to the King in Orange is to ignore him.

No meetings or negotiations or communications with America.

Continue to build up capability to defend Greenland and Europe from outside threats.

And accelerate disengagement from American companies.

There's something so heartbreaking about that image: kids fighting back with all they have - walls of snow.
My daughter's school in Richfield, MN (adjacent to Minneapolis) is closing tomorrow due of out-of-control federal agents. Fourth graders spent the week building walls of snow at recess to protect their classmates from ICE. This isn't about immigration enforcement, it's about terror.

YES. GOOD NEWS. I don't know about anyone else but I need this kind of optimism to spur me into activism. The future is worth saving.
meanwhile.... medicine has taken INSANE leaps and bounds in the last 2 years.
we're out here curing HIV and leukemia and creating 100% efficacy vaccines against all sorts of cancers, and now this??

between this and renewable energy outstripping fossil fuels in efficiency, the future is bright

For the record, he is a traitor, thus ineligible for the presidency, and his entire reign is illegitimate on a legal level. This seems worth stating from time to time.
NYT: “In a newly obtained recording of a phone call from late 2020, President Trump can be heard pressing the speaker of the Georgia House of Representatives to hold a special legislative session to overturn Mr. Trump’s election loss.”

I had been dreading the treaty anniversary as an occasion to note that we have not done nearly enough, but in July I thought we might be able celebrate it. Because, on 23 July, the international court of justice handed down an epochal ruling....

Gah, it needs to be funnier. It's not funny enough to stop me doing a po-faced feminist subtextual analysis of how it reinforces incel entitlement culture and legitimises insane levels of jealousy. I wish it was funnier.
