getting people back into theatres requires two things: a greater diversity of well-produced and marketed films, along with exhibitors working to build community around the idea of moviegoing
I am not sure how to get people back into theaters or if it's possible, but I do know that if the strongest remaining argument is "you SHOULD," or something about the holiness of the collective big-screen experience, the battle is lost. That has no traction with people who don't already believe it.

For @prospect.org, I wrote about SINNERS as the movie of 2025 (not necessarily the best, but certainly the one that best fused popularity and acclaim) and why Hollywood treated its success like a threat. prospect.org/2025/12/11/s...
The Hit Hollywood Didn’t Want - The American Prospect
Ryan Coogler’s bloodsucker blockbuster is all about Black creative freedom. No wonder the industry saw it as a threat.

Finally. My big 2800 word essay about One Battle After Another and its black women characters is live. www.vulture.com/article/blac...
Black Actresses Are Carrying One Battle After Another
Teyana Taylor, Chase Infiniti, and Regina Hall propel the film’s most conflicted ideas, for better and worse.

“Political prescription isn’t the point; teasing out the humanity of these people is.”

An incredible critique by @angelicabastien.bsky.social’s via @vulture.com that looks at the faults of ONE BATTLE AFTER ANOTHER without negating the agency of its Black actresses.

Materialists hit me in a really specific way, as a film made by someone genuinely disturbed by the inhuman, transactional behaviour of many people around her, and how that has destabilized our sense of self-worth and the value we see in others

A startling pressing work that uses only video recorded at the time to revise erroneous reporting at the time. Should've informed us more about the encroachment of corporate power into government 26 years ago.

RIP Tatsuya Nakadai

There are currently 25 films he was in available on the Criterion Channel*. Plenty of great film options to watch in tribute, but, just sayin', it may be a great time to watch all three parts of THE HUMAN CONDITION.

*In Canada; I cannot speak for other regions.

Rosalind Franklin was born #OTD in 1920. Her X-ray diffraction work was critical for establishing the helical nature of DNA. 👩‍🔬 🧪

Work carried out by Franklin (with doctoral student Raymond Gosling) was given to Watson and Crick without her consent.

Farewell sweet Prince
Eric Adams is amazing because when he won every media person was leaping over each to go “this is the normal sane leadership that the political left doesn’t understand normal sane Americans crave” and then every day since that Eric Adams has been like “Leprechauns are real and I’m going to cook one”

SIRAT - Arthouse Mad Max. The title refers to a bridge connecting hell and paradise, and the film channels that same energy: shifting between the arduous and the exhilarating. It isn't bleak or cynical; kindness persists even as everything crumbles. The world’s ending anyway — might as well dance. 📽️

IT WAS JUST AN ACCIDENT – Dir. Jafar Panahi is fearless. I’m in awe of his resourcefulness as a filmmaker. Even in confinement, he made films that took aim at Iranian society. This one’s suspenseful, unexpectedly funny, & deeply moving - a powerful act of political resistance. So grateful for him. 📽️
