Yes but it wasn’t always the same desk and you could start the paper as soon you found it. Once my desk was in an overflow room we weren’t told about so I and another girl were in a total panic. Penalty of having names near the end of the alphabet.

I always thought reading out essays was a cop out because tutors never had to read, mark or really consider thoroughly what one had written. Some, not all, seemed to consider undergraduates an unwelcome distraction.

50 years ago so I don’t know how much has changed but certainly for History, English and Mod Langs then, more than two years work was wholly assessed in one intense week of exams.
