I first saw and read Stoppard’s work my first year of college. For me, he has always been part of the canon, but also always working and generating new, surprising theater.

I’ll miss having new Stoppard plays.

At this point X is like 1950s Vienna, a whole place made up entirely of spies, running ops against other spies, with no non-spy people. Or maybe like a 1971 Black Panthers convention where 3/4 of the attendees are conintelrpo.

Just a friendly reminder as we go into the holidays:

Folks don't have to explain to you why they don't drink.

If you offer them a drink and they decline, don't ask them why. It's not your business.

Just offer them something without alcohol to drink instead. And move on.

New — I wrote about the myriad ways journalism’s moral rot manifests, and how our crumbling institutions have created the conditions for it to fester:
Moral rot in elite journalism is killing the whole field
The Nuzzi/RFK Jr. mess and the revelation of Esptein's journo pals lay bare a profound moral absence at the heart of our free press.

Larry Summers is too dumb and smug to grasp he’s not always the smartest person in the room despite spending decades at …

Harvard, a place where everyone, in every room, knows *something* you don’t and understands *something* better than you ever will.

Larry Summers will stay dumb forever.

Alan Dershowitz is one of those claiming Epstein was not a pedophile because he pleaded guilty to one count of having sex for money with a 17-year-and-10-month-old person. "That’s not a pedophile." See this important response from Julia Brown, the brave reporter who broke the news on this

Oates represents something Musk fundamentally cannot buy: the authority of cultural memory. this is a concept i call "ontological entitlement"—the hyper-rich, having gained endless material resources, begin to assume an inherent right to emotional, intellectual, and spiritual ones as well.
