Remember, the Secretary of Transportation is absolutely terrified of this subway system. Just mentioning the ACE line will reduce him to tears.

And yet ...
Freaking love this city and all the people in it so much….a bunch of people went and turned the 4 train into the Polar Express giving out toys to kids along the way from the Bronx to Brooklyn….shoutout to the @newyorkers.live account on IG for doing this 🙏 www.instagram.com/reel/DSnsvWS...

If you mooks who spent time railing on how irritating Ziggy Sobotka was, you might now take the time to find the pivotal scene when Zig and his father take a walk along the piers by the dead grain pier and get close enough to share a cigarette. Or go fuck yourself for missing all that matters.
In memory of James Ransone I'm undertaking a rapid rewatch of The Wire season two. It reminds me of the impact that de-industrialisation had on my local community. The sense of anger and powerlesness is beautifully captured by the brilliant David Simon.

Btw this is one of the biggest reasons why it’s not as easy as people think to start up independent newsrooms or just be an indie journalist on substack. If you are actually holding powerful and rich people to account, you WILL need legal representation. Not a matter of whether but when
I say that as someone who has started newsrooms from scratch sometimes with two people - if you’re doing your job correctly you will need a lawyer because the first thing rich people do when you write something they don’t like is threaten you legally. It’s cheap for them and expensive for you

* Pollution: -22%
* Revenue for mass transit: $548M

So YES this has been a huge success.

It's the least important element to this, but I find it fascinating on an aesthetic level too.

Americans are watching a bootleg broadcast that someone in Canada recorded off their TV. And people are copying it to various platforms (however imperfect visually) to get it out as widely as possible.

It’s great that 60 Minutes correspondent Sharyn Alfonsi is coming right out swinging. Not having a second of this bullshit!

I think coddled hacks like Bari Weiss have no idea what to do with righteous fury like this except, if anything, somehow play victim. Let’s see!
Again, from Michael Grynbaum, here is Sharyn Alfonsi's full email.

It must be read:

A huge scandal.

Bari Weiss has destroyed the credibility of @cbsnews.com in record time.

It’s almost impressive.

Almost.
“Our story was screened five times and cleared by both CBS attorneys and Standards and Practices,” Ms. Alfonsi wrote in the note “It is factually correct.”

This is one part of what it looks like when the government has been taken over by a fascist movement that's trying to push out its reactionary vision of national rebirth—women & racial minorities purged from positions of authority & re-subordinated, etc—through all cultural & professional spaces
Because it’s not just Bari Weiss’ CBS asking this question—in the last few months, I’ve been approached by half a dozen different shows looking to ‘debate’ the same topic.

I even got a request from NPR-distributed “Open to Debate” to see if I’d weigh in on “Has Feminism Hurt Women?”
