With current technology, it is impossible to tell whether survey respondents are real or bots. Among other things, makes it easy for bad actors to manipulate outcomes. No good news here for the future of online-based survey research

I think the inflatable costumes play a helpful role for the reasons you state, but the larger problem is not that they take away from the message, but that the message lacked concrete policy demands that could be used to build and sustain a movement. "We don't like authoritarianism" is not enough.
