Today in "Don't Trust AI to Tell You Facts": How several different "AI" programs messed up the simple fact of to whom I dedicated a book, and what that means for how much you should trust "AI" to tell you the truth about things (spoiler: not much at all):

“AI”: A Dedicated Fact-Failing Machine, or, Yet Another Reason Not to Trust It For Anything
I search my name on a regular basis, not only because I am an ego monster (although I try not to pretend that I’m not) but because it’s a good way for me to find reviews, end-of-the-yea…

this is all very true, as is the fact that Lowtax was roughly 100x more responsible and concerned with the impact of his platform on society and the world than any social media CEO
Genuinely not unreasonable to say that Lowtax sucked so bad he fucked up the entire planet, and that most of the problems with the internet can be laid at the door of Something Awful

I’ve got an idea on how to raise test scores…
I feel like yes, you could invest in like, after-school programs, or you can just change a kid's life by giving them a magical talisman

Everyone's favorite disney princess next year will be the uncanny valley constantly melting figure who in 10 second intervals encourages children to drink household cleaning products.

Her hit show on Disney+ will have a billion views a week and a full line of merch and a movie franchise coming out.

Okay, but is that sunflower in black face??
New! We worked with the Public Interest Research Group to test a bunch of LLM-driven toys ahead of the Christmas. That sexual talking teddy bear wasn't a one-off; it turns out disturbing behavior is deeply built into these toys across the board.
AI toys for kids talk about sex and issue Chinese Communist Party talking points, tests show
New research from Public Interest Research Group and tests conducted by NBC News found that a wide range of AI toys have loose guardrails.

This is actually a really good comparison.
You might have thought that experience with autocorrect would have tempered enthusiasm for AI somewhat. Autocorrect makes lots of useful corrections. It also intrudes with inane unwanted corrections that distract and slow you down. AI will have both of those characteristics, on a much bigger scale.

a lot of sci fi/comedy correctly envisioned a future full of annoying devices that talk to you in an inappropriately chirpy tone about every topic ("you've got leprosy!") but it incorrectly assumed it would match existing annoying customer service voice instead of developing a novel annoying voice

I have been saying this for years. I’m always sad there are not more muppet adaptations of classic literature.
Just saw a Muppets Christmas Carol again and I am once again reminded that it is, in fact, probably the best and most faithful adaptation of the novel ever.

Caine’s decision to play the role completely straight was absolutely perfect and brilliant.

A Grand Yuletide Theory: The Muppet Christmas Carol is the Best Adaptation of A Christmas Carol
Only one movie has ever managed to recreate that uniquely Dickens magic, achieving it not so much through adaptation as through transmutation.

My brother was shopping for a new wheelchair last month. Hearing what safety features inspired considers “optional” was yet another radicalizing moment.
Roger Marshall: "We want patients to become consumers again. We want patients to see what the actual prices are. We believe that if we would add the price tags to this bill, that it would save the country a trillion dollars a year."

Wikipedia is a goddamn miracle.
Billions of pageviews, millions of unique devices, and hundreds of languages tell the same story. In an age of rising misinformation and fleeting headlines, Wikipedia remains a cornerstone for reliable information online. 🧵⬇️ (1/4)

This is your annual reminder that the Time Person of the Year award is NOT meant as an endorsement, for example they gave the award to Adolf Hitler in 1938, 1939, 1940, 1941, 1942, and 1943 (when the magazine was renamed Hitler Monthly)

Also, of course, the State Department changing typefaces for reasons that boil down to "fuck accessibility" is both utterly in line with the overt bigotry of this administration and a signal indicator of how unserious these people are, it doesn't matter what typeface you use when you're a joke

It's been wild to see Reddit's reputation evolve (justifiably) from "wretched hive of scum and villainy" to "at least these are real people" to "the last bastion of real people on the internet"
I'll add that as someone who not that long ago spent many frantic nights looking for information on sleep training, feeding, etc etc--by far the most valuable internet resource was reddit, the only place with human advice. Everything else is basically useless at this point.
This entire grift relies on convincing people that they don't know how to do the things they have always known how to do, and ironically, if it works, we will, in a very short amount of time, forget how to do all the things we have always known how to do.
