They could try the seemingly out of fashion thinking of just being honest? That they acknowledge the UK would be better off in the EU and that they see that as our preferred strategic direction, but that it's not practical whilst there's a high risk of a Brexiteer government - it's up to the voters.

The fact the British political system went along with, and even now still tries to prop up, such an obviously self-harming policy is utterly frustrating. The majority of MPs and members of the press *knew* it would lead to this, but they went along with it anyway. Cowardly dereliction of duty.
