the cycle of “devs working for years to make a game > game launches (and it doesn’t matter how successful it is) > two week waiting period > most of the team laid off” is not only entirely unsustainable but genuinely horrifying
Highguard developer Wildlight has reportedly laid off most of its team, says one a level designer sharing the news of layoffs.

The live service game launched just two weeks ago after being revealed at The Game Awards.

…Sure., I’m feeling spicy today. Let’s say something nuclear:

It’s not about modes.
It’s not about accessibility.
It’s not about having a road map.

Your favorite game genre is probably not going to survive capitalism.
The 2XKO situation just reaffirms to me that Fighting Games need to have single player content.

There's been a lot of discourse about live service games, but the fact that they *demand* an ongoing, employer-like relationship with players in order to be successful is unsustainable. Games can't keep being made that way

Everyone go cancel your Nitro now. You still get the perks until the end of the payment cycle and if an absolute shitload of people do this they'll crap their pants and try to backpedal.

Also if they don't, there's a chance all of your friends & fav creators will work on changing to something else.

on the other, zombocom was a parody of peak dot com bubble. an ai guy buying it has good odds of being The Funniest Thing Ever in a year or two

On the back of this, I saw that a Japanese video was being autodubbed for me today. Went to turn off the feature. When I found you couldn't do it except on a per language basis, I manually went through and selected every language on the list as a preferred language out of spite. Get fucked losers.

xbox 360 games will never "become" retro, because they were specifically defined in opposition to retro, much as postmodern literature isn't suddenly reclassified as regular modernist once it's old enough. xbox 360 games can become old, but they can't become retro. if you post sanae at me ill kill y

he settles it forever: "retro" refers to a specific time period which was defined in the ps3 era. the bar for what is considered "retro" does not move forward as time passes. it's comparable to "modernist" literature, the name being temporal doesn't mean it changes over time, it's just a name.

In case you missed yesterday, Notepad++ auto-update mechanism was hacked and was delivering backdoored versions for a couple months. Tons of devs use this, uninstall completely what you have, search for the sus files mentioned in article and only download from official site
Notepad++ users take note: It's time to check if you're hacked
Suspected China-state hackers used update infrastructure to deliver backdoored version.

More SFII planning sheets from the Capcom exhibition in Tokyo. Dhalsim's stage has nothing unusual or incriminating -- the stage name just says "India". There are some cute sketches/stamps, though.

I went to the Capcom exhibition today; they had a number of original planning docs for SFII, Final Fight and Rockman. The SFII stages looked like they were stored 'gatefolded' since there was some writing visible in the back, eg. Bison/Balrog's stage had written "USA: Tyson"...🤯
