I've received some information from a local about the individual accused of being the SLC shooter (who did not fire, was shot by 'official' security who also hit and killed an unrelated person

He'd done armed protesting before. Dressed more radically. Was a little awkward. no more than that
The shooting at the Salt Lake City protest is strange. The guy with the AR never fired it, and instead appears to have been engaged by "peacekeepers" or protest "security" in yellow security vests?
Moment of the shooting at 0:02 in this video. I believe the guy partially hidden fired at Gamboa, and struck someone marching in the street behind him. The mortally wounded man was tended to near the blue Mazda near the red X. h/t @mrsissy.bsky.social for vid

Here's some pictures of him at a protest in 2020 dressed similarly to yesterday. Per my source,

"In my circles, we are currently thinking he was dressed too militantly for a liberal march and scared jumpy "security" while adjusting kit."

Gamboa has carried a weapon to other protests in the past, as is legal in Utah.

The problem with everyone carrying guns is that anyone gets to claim they saw imminent danger and fire at anyone else pulling a gun.

Anyone seeing the yellow-vest guy raise his gun and point it at a crowd could have shot the yellow-vest guy (and they'd have saved an innocent bystander's life btw).
I wouldn't be surprised if this is part of the reasoning behind the charges. The guards may well have acted inappropriately but I think they were acting under the assumption, correct or not that this guy posed imminent danger + they had a reason for being armed that the cops understood - being guard

Yeah see? They have their comments off. This is a fucked up situation and indications might point to the cops trying to railroad the guy who didn't fire a shot

The public statements attributed to people claiming to be 50501 protest organizers, praising the shooters' actions, are NOT smart.

Careless public statements ratifying the actions tend to strengthen "respondeat superior" claims and may even, rarely, provide an *independent* basis for liabilityz
If it turns out that the Utah 50501 protest organizers officially sanctioned these armed yellow-vest security volunteers, then I would not be surprised if organizers get sued under a "negligent supervision" theory of liability — by all victims who experienced either physical or psychological harms.

Philly local tv station reporting that a man allegedly posed as an ICE agent in order to rob a car repair business office.
How many other criminals might be getting this idea right now, given that actual ICE agents are refusing to show IDs, warrants, badges?

Would also like to read it. Would love to know how the "crackdown on speech is affecting writers" in a paywalled article at the gatekept conference. I can say whatever I want and Taco Bell hasn't sued me yet. What can't they say at AWP?
Does anyone have a gift link to this piece about #awp?

It sounds hyperbolic but I actually don’t know how to bridge the gulf that appears to exist between people like me, who prefer that their children be alive, and people like this, who I guess don’t
Parents of the child who died of measles have joined RFK-founded Children's Health Defense. Anti-vaccine groups excel at swooping in for tragedy, offering parents a cause.

“Don’t do the shots,” her mother said, measles is “not as bad as they’re making it out to be.”

Anti-vaccine influencers see the child’s death as proof — not of the danger of measles, but of their own debunked theories.

Judge REYES on a tear, telling DOJ she won't be "gaslit" by effort to say their ban on transgender people in the military isn't actually a "ban."

She notes SecDef Hegseth literally called it a ban on X.

"You're saying one thing in public. You're saying a different thing in court," Reyes said.

there's a real fun "emperor's new clothes" aspect to all this where everyone in politics is sort of standing around avoiding each other's eyes because if any of them actually admit to the level of crisis currently taking place, they might have to do something about it
