What's even more depressing is that the responses calling for more gun control don't even seem to understand how intractable the problem is under current conditions.

Look, there’s a simple solution to private equity buying up and enshittifying the software that keeps us safe: a handful of municipal fire/rescue departments should team up, collaboratively build and share better software, and release it into the public domain. This is a common pattern!

In late 2020 a Chinese man called Guan Heng travelled to Xinjiang with our BuzzFeed map of detention facilities to provide ground truth for our work - he provided the first corroborating evidence for many sites.

He escaped to the US - then ICE detained him.

12 killed, one offender killed and one in custody according to the NSW premier at ongoing press conference. Thoughts are with Australia’s jewish community as they celebrate Hanukkah. The investigation is just beginning - there are things we don’t have answers to.
Just got to the airport and checking news after a few hours offline to see the tragic news of the attack at the Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach. Our thoughts are with the community in Australia and the victims and survivors of this attack. www.smh.com.au/national/nsw...

Last I saw auto manufacturers were working on a universal system that could unobtrusively monitor BAC as part of standard safety equipment - this combined with an emergency move feature would be cool. Okay you are drunk and gotta move your car outta the road, max speed 3mph w warning lights and horn
again, ignition interlocks are one of those things where there basically *really is* a technological solution to the problem that greatly mitigates that tradeoffs, and it's a policy failure that they aren't mandatory for five years after your first DUI.
“Drunk and drugged driving is now so common in car-centric California that drivers routinely rack up four, five, six DUIs. One woman in Fresno just got her 16th.”

What's crazy is that there are multiple places called Stinky's Bar and Grill in the US. I looked it up and was like oh that's not so bad, friends it was the Pittsburgh Stinky's. Why are you naming your restraunts this?!
If you want to do something like this, why not buy a $150k home in a small town in Italy, France, Spain, or Mexico, instead of having nine people share one bathroom after they eat at a restaurant called "Stinky's?"

WOW. @haleaziz.bsky.social with a new scoop: ICE now gets a running list of every person who is going to be taking a domestic flight inside the United States from the TSA and runs it through their database looking for targets. This explains the Babson College student's arrest.

Even in cases like this where the crimes are beyond horrific I can't help but think of the failure of society to protect the child this man once was and how that failure made everyone less safe.

Trump gonna have us looking like Turkey
With inflation still ticking higher, trade war nonsense remaining the current regime and the government shutdown aftermath presumably being really bad for the economy, cutting rates further now removes the ability to cut rates when it is actually economically necessary later.

I don't say this lightly - what the fuck. This is so impressive, I kinda can't even put into words how hard it would be to do this. I can't imagine how many pieces broke at some point during the process.
This is not glass. This 11th century Fatimid ewer was made from a single block of rock crystal, one of the hardest minerals to carve. There are seven similar ewers in existence.
