2025 Movie Thread starts here.

1. EMILIA PÉREZ (2024). I cannot believe this is an Oscar nominated film, let alone front runner.

Just didn’t work … at all. Bizarre.

There are ways to make it, as an individual consumer, a good experience.

For instance, and I'll shout forever about this: AMC's A-List is the single greatest subscription service that exists. It takes the price point on seeing even movies a month to reasonable - do more than that, you're ahead.
Seeing movies in theaters is great, and it's not consumers' fault that seeing a movie in most chain theaters is a bad experience.

If movie theaters were a thing consumers loved, they would be there. They go there for horror movies, some action blockbusters. Let me reiterate a line I wrote decades ago about the nascent digital space: Consumers have taken control of their entertainment experience & they are never giving it back.

What an incredible quote.

These people are self-lobotomizing in real time and its wild.
Jimmy Fallon: "And do you use ChatGPT when raising your baby?"

Sam Altman: "I cannot imagine figuring out how to raise a newborn without ChatGPT."

This is very similar to my alma mater. They've leaned in on sports, aggressively recruiting transfers from shuttered colleges and pre-career majors like nursing.

A big issue as the piece lays out: Too many colleges offering mostly the same thing at a steep price.
For a couple of years now, I've been fascinated with what's happening at small liberal arts colleges, which are running out of money for reasons unrelated to Trump funding cuts. Businessweek let me go deep on the problems, and one college that's trying to blaze a new trail.
Why a College Fighting for Survival Is Slashing Econ and Physics Majors
At Albright in Pennsylvania, the new president is cutting programs, selling art and real estate, and vowing not to hire anyone with tenure. Is this the way forward for liberal arts colleges?

It’s genuinely unbelievable how much the average right winger’s conception of history is based on post-war American advertising of the mid 20th century

I love how the Times keeps going back to the same callous, racist down-home folks to seek their sanction for this administration’s cruelty and incompetence. This week: what do you think of the boat strikes?

I knew I’d seen this Charles Vaughters — Marine vet, college student — before.

I asked ESPN Research and they asked Elias Sports Bureau and they looked back as far as they could (to 1978) and it would appear Jalen Hurts is the first player to ever commit two turnovers in one play. Isn't history beautiful?

The anti-MAHA messaging really needs to play this up. Do you realize the infant mortality rate in the US less than 100 years ago was over 60 per 1000 births and now it's down to 5.47 per 1000.
Also formula is a medical miracle. Babies used to just fucking starve to death!

My wife has a number of food allergies and we were advised to formula feed (which also helped our son’s terrible acid reflux). He’s a thriving 18yo with no food allergies.

RFK Jr and these clowns are like a quarter step from advising we bleed humors.
Also formula is a medical miracle. Babies used to just fucking starve to death!

I've been thinking about this on and off for a few hours, and it is such a perfect encapsulation of why the right wing is Like That these days.

Kim and I have house parties all the time. They're great. If you're not getting invited to house parties, that is very much a "you" issue.

we all got cowed into avoiding "virtue signaling" as if the public affirmation of socially agreed upon ethical principles was somehow cringey instead of a significant part of what a "society" even is. now all there's left is vice signaling, and it's reshaping society.
December 8, 2025 at 6:07 PM
Because nothing is really new... coming out of the Spanish Flu pandemic we had a period of decreased inhibitions around social vices, aggressive moves by the business and finance class and such in the 1920s.

(Do not look up what happened afterwards, I'm sure it all went great.)
this is really interesting

I had been mostly convinced that the crime spike in the US was primarily caused by the post-Floyd cop strike, especially because of the lack of an international analog

but this suggests a whole lot of US society just came unglued after 2020

Bush v. Gore is already the most important Court ruling of the 20th Century and now we're just gonna apply it broadly to anything the Right doesn't like
Holy shit this back and forth between Kagan/Alito/Jackson/&the SG.

Kagan: Doesn't your logic mean a whole raft of other agencies must be invalidated?
SG: Yes, but that's not being litigated right now
Kagan: So what?
Alito: What if we just want to say "but maybe don't apply our logic elsewhere?"

then, the transphobes , feeling victorious at how many people they have made unhappy and despairing in the previous week, move on to anything else that has a spectrum and the possibility of more colours than they can conceive - such hateful people - they cannot understand anything that is not THEM

I think Mattingly’s best (only) chance to get in is to take another manager’s job and win. Build a hybrid case like Joe Torre (in) and Dusty Baker/Davey Johnson (should be in).
As with any kid from New York City born into a Yankee fan family in the early 1980s, I adored Mattingly, but he's just not a Hall of Famer. He could've been, but stupid locker room horseplay led to a career-changing back injury.
