Yeah, the reason is it has a massive marketing budget and 40 years of historical fanbase - if you released 5th edition without the D&D signifiers, people would glance at it and go, "huh, this kinda sucks" and then go back to playing literally anything else
I think 5e gets weird flack for this in that the “crunchy-and-tacticalish combat but super vibesy, story focused social encounters with occasional roll” quadrant is probably actually the sweet spot for a lot of people
