Final reading list for my AI course follows, week by week. UC summer sessions are 5 weeks, compressed from the 10 week regular quarter (already short). So, teaching Comm/Media undergrads an upper division class on this, during the summer of the constantly moving AI needle was… a challenge. Still:

Pinned 🧵 -- a Critical AI reading list I'm building in conjuction with a course I'm teaching this summer. I'll be adding to this during the summer, both scholarly works and non-academic public writings, beginning with the Brian Merchant article in the post below:

I'm building a list of sources, in the meantime. @bcmerchant.bsky.social's "Blood in the Machine" is in my Top 5. I'm happy to take other suggestions, and I'll be publishing the reading list. 4/4

The fact that this coming 9 days before the largest peaceful protest in modern American history is absolutely intentional. We will not back down. Trump and Miller can lie, smear, and threaten all they want. They will lose. No Kings, No Kings, No Kings. www.reuters.com/legal/govern...

This is so good, not only as a review but also as political and media commentary on the version of the Left the feds would like people to believe they're up against.

📣 Germany's close to reversing its opposition to mass surveillance & private message scanning, & backing the Chat Control bill. This could end private comms-& Signal-in the EU.

Time's short and they're counting on obscurity: please let German politicians know how horrifying their reversal would be.

We are alarmed by reports that Germany is on the verge of a catastrophic about-face, reversing its longstanding and principled opposition to the EU’s Chat Control proposal which, if passed, could spell the end of the right to privacy in Europe. signal.org/blog/pdfs/ge...

"I have no idea if Bratton is cultivating a "bad boy of AI orthodoxy" image as a kind of online brand or if this is just his personality."

I know I'm not supposed to laugh, but this was hilarious to me.

I haven't been on here all day, but every note I see about this is worse than the last. WTF.

“The new tech will track 29 body parts of each player as they move across the court — although which specific body parts and exactly how they will be tracked, AWS did not say.”

Granular tracking of Black athletes’ “body parts” and the likely betting markets is a bit too on the nose for this moment

we should stop letting the police departments in supposedly progressive cities use poor communities as policy labs for dangerous technology designed to incarcerate as many of those people as possible

I agree that honesty, perseverance, and wrestling genuinely with hard problems are qualities we need to encourage and develop, so I appreciate this response. I'm moving away altogether from the kind of high-stakes assessments that encourage cheating. But I recognize that's not always an option.

We need to figure out how to take a hard turn away from policing students. They didn't create this problem. Educators didn't create this problem. All attention on control and stricture is wasted, while further entrenching and legitimizing industry extraction. Let students live. Change your pedagogy.

I’ve seen this Wikipedia resource on Signs of AI Writing going around. I would caution folks looking to use it as a manual or even reference in course assessment contexts. It is definitely useful and descriptive thinking out loud within the context of Wikipedia. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikiped...

There is nothing more likely to send me into a rage than hardware problems. I know, but that's my work that just became inaccessible, my god.

First my drive failed, then in the process of troubleshooting, my BIOS demanded an update, now my HDMI out is broken too. Whyyyyy. Don't answer that.

There's no more money on the money tree. Venture Capitalists have run out.

OpenAl threatens the future of available capital for the entire tech industry.
spavel.bsky.social
You should read the whole piece from @edzitron.com but if you only read one paragraph, make it this one: OpenAI has burned so much money that there is no more money.

Read that again: it's not just OpenAI that's broke. All of VC is broke.

www.wheresyoured.at/the-case-aga...
Venture Capital Will Run Out At The Current Rate of Investment In Six Quarters, And OpenAI Needs More Investment Than Ever: The Information recently published some worrying data from venture capitalist Jon Sakoda — that “at today’s clip, the industry would run out of money in six quarters,” adding that the money wouldn’t run out until the end of 2028 if it wasn’t for Anthropic and OpenAI. In a very real sense, OpenAI threatens the future of available capital for the tech industry.

As someone currently on probation at Princeton, what also stands out here is the sham faculty governance on display:

Faculty panel reviews all the evidence n decides there is no grounds for suspension.

Admin overrules their decision n Provost Kavita Bala calls for significant disciplinary action.

You too!! ❤️ It's been a weird summer/ fall so far, and I'm exhausted by the world. I keep scrolling through and finding no respite here, either. I really do think we need some silliness to balance out the doom and keep us together.

christ on tiny little crackers, climateworld, we've got to ask people to do good things that they can do, and which help them, rather than asking them to volunteer for an emotionally devastating existential-threat experience without exits into action
drkatemarvel.bsky.social
my takeaway from climate week nyc is that "climate storytelling" is a little too much "we must reimagine our deepest souls in relationship to mother nature and the moral abyss of the polycrisis into which we must now stare" and not enough "ok but get a heat pump"

Shouldn't that be not *too* hard to build for Bluesky?

I think polls would be a very popular feature. (They don't have to be scientifically accurate! Just for funsies!)
