Yes.
When people have asked me what it is like to work in a school I simply reply “unremitting”.

Recovering from last night’s party with neighbours. ✔️

Taking the dog for a walk.

Philosophy coursework.

Going to the gym with son-in-law.

Slumping.
We made it to the end of the month!

What have you got planned for the last day of January?

I was aged 14-17 when mum and dad lived in Paris. I was at boarding school but spent all my holidays there. The city frightened me a bit, as I was at a very awkward age, but I loved walking around it. And for two summers, I worked there, first as a general labourer, then as a consular assistant (!!)
in this week's newsletter! I asked myself "huh, why do I dislike Paris so much?" and I tried to have a Big Think about my weird relationship with the city: youngvulgarian.substack.com/p/i-huh-went... [free to read!]

catherine o’hara was absolutely god-tier at harmonization, first of all, and then the fact that she performed this number in character, with all those subtle expressions and moments, is just…fuck. a once-in-a-lifetime talent

I always fancied a gender lager top 🍺 💪
Remember, the difference between gender ale and gender lager is in the fermentation style: gender ale is a top, whereas gender lager is a bottom
this is officially the funniest typo I've ever made

This sounds beautiful. I met Mackenzie Crook years ago. He was about to make a sitcom pilot, about metal detecting. He didn’t think it was what people were after www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio...
‘Watching The Office recently, my heart just sank’ – Mackenzie Crook on comedy, cruelty and being TV royalty
After a very hard landing into fame in the 00s, he decided to take a softer approach – and hit on a winning formula for classic comedy. The star talks about his fantastical new show Small Prophets, hi...

Hot yoga is such a crock of shit anyway. I like it slow and mildly chilly, with my elderly North London Indian mates, as I have done since 2001.
Unfortunately it appears the fire that has blocked trains out of Euston today is in a building that houses a hot yoga studio that promises "controlled heat". www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

There is major disruption on all rail services between Euston station and Watford Junction.

🤣 because this is funny.

😞 because in 2016 the UK made itself the unofficial European joke.

Apropos of nothing…

In 1987, the OC of the UK UN peacekeepers in Lebanon contrasted the approach taken by UK and Italy (conciliatory) with the US Marines, who returned ten rounds for every one shot at them. The UK HQ was hit by a rocket once, by mistake (they said sorry).

The US was lorry-bombed.

I used to train people in creative thinking. One method of problem solving is to think of ways to make the problem even worse (and thereby find unthought-of solutions).

Reeves has done this and forgotten she was making things shitter. “How can we make 18-35 year-olds hate us as well?”

Rachel Reeves: "It is not right that people who don't go to university bear the cost for others to." I don't use local leisure centres and I don't drive, so will I be made exempt for taxation that pays for all that stuff? Or is it only education we'll be going after

My grandfather, p/o Joseph Unsworth DFM, flew Manchesters, the two-engine versions of the Lancaster. Pilots complained that the planes didn’t have the power to escape enemy aircraft. Joe was shot down over Belgium before the Lancaster came into
service.

I love how open MI6 is about itself now; I kept my failure, at the Final Selection Board, to join SIS secret for years because of the warnings in all the correspondence I’d received. I’d have been a shit spook btw.
New post out:

"How MI6 works"

We interviewed Richard Moore the man who was "C" - Chief of MI6 - until September.

In part one we talked about MI6 operates - how does C work with the Prime Minister? Does he think there's a "deep state" etc...

Not one of my favourite ballets.
Today is the 137th anniversary of the rather unpleasant Mayerling ‘incident’, when Rudolf, 30-year-old Crown Prince of Austria, shot his 17-year-old lover Baroness Mary Vetsera, and turned the gun on himself. She had been his mistress for a grand total of 16 days 🧵
