I think one of the defining things about our era and about conservativism, is an inability to distinguish between like, the actual government, and mid-level marketing managers at Target (who choose "happy holidays" to avoid leaving out non-Christian customers)

In retrospect the Bush-era War On Christmas stuff seems more ominous than it did at the time. It was just cable news guys crying about dumb/fake shit, then and now; I mean the campaign to turn Christmas, which most everyone likes and feels warmly about, into just another thing to get mad about.

ari meets some diabolically-named characters. we get some news. ari finally has enough.
Sky: Hah! Not anymore. Two humans arrive, wearing dark clothes. They're young, but they both have white hair in that fantasy kind of way. The woman, Ylyse, looks sweet and wears a translucent veil. The man, Yves, looks like he hasn't ever slept or felt joy. Yves: My prince! I was hoping to speak. My trackers - Ari: I know you! You're from the Ydyllyd family! You're the rulers of Darknight! Yves looks offended at the interruption. Yves: ... Who is your man here? Sky: Forgive him, he's just excited. This is my good friend, Ari Loesser. Yves: Hmm... I don't know the family. Sky: Well, not everyone is as famous as you are, Yves. Ylyse: A pleasure to meet you, sir. Any friend of Prince Sky's is a friend of ours. Sky (to Ari): Anyway, Ari, you were right. This is Lord Yves Ydyllyd of Darknight. And I would be remiss not to mention the lovely Lady Ylyse, his sister, and my betrothed. Ari is stunned silent. Yves: Introductions bore me to tears. As I was saying, my men have found some shed unicorn hairs in the Princewood. It's a good sign for the hunt tomorrow. Ari: Augh, wow, I don't feel so good. Sky: Ari? Ari swoons. Sky catches him. Sky: woah! Hey! Hey there! Ylyse: Oh no! Sky: It's... it's been a long day for him. I'll take him back to my tent and make sure he's looked after. But we'll talk later, Yves. I'll catch up with you. Yves: Yes... I suppose you'll have to. Sky takes Ari back to his tent. Sky: Come on, buddy, it's okay. You're okay. Y'know, I was pretty sick myself when I first came from the Other World. Ari reels around to confront him. Ari: What the FUCK is going on, Sky?!?!?

This is the thread for my minicomic, Into the Bladelands! I will be posting updates of anywhere from 2-4 pages here, hopefully to be finished before the end of the year.

Sky disappears. Ari gets left behind. Five years later, the door to the Bladelands opens again.
Into the Bladelans cover Ari (vo): When I was sixteen, my best friend disappeared. We grew up together in the woods between our houses. Sky could have fun no matter what. Sky: Pick up your sword and fith me like a man! Ari: Wait for me! Ari (vo): My favorite thing to do was just live in his world. Bully: Whatcha drawin, faggots? The map to your honeymoon? Sky punches him. Later, Ari tends to his wounds. Sky: You probably think I'm really stupid. Ari: I just think you're really brave. They kiss. Sky: We can't tell anyone about this, okay? Ari: Yeah, of course. A couple years pass. Sky and Ari are looking at the stars. Sky: Y'know, I think about it all the time. Ari: What we've been doing? Sky: No, man, the Bladelands! We'd run shit over there. Be warriors or kings or whatever. Ari: Heh, too bad it's not real. Sky: well, it could be. Ari: Dude. Sky: I'm just saying! Maybe we were picking up a signal or something. Like a radio station from another state, but with dragons. It feels like that sometimes. Y'know, I turn 17 tomorrow. And I'm starting to freak out a little because, like, this is it? I thought I could be more than this. Ari: Hey, you can be! When we're 18, we can get out of here. We'll move to the city. Together. Sky: I guess... it still just all feels so small. At least in the Bladelands, there's magic. And prophecy, and swords, and danger. You can be an adventurer. You can at least be, like, an important person. Ari: You're important, Sky. You're important to me. Sky: Heh. Gayyy. Ari: Shut up. Ari (VO): That was the last night I ever saw him. Ari walks away. Sky spots a mysterious portal behind a tree and reaches out to it. Ari (Vo): The next day, he was gone. We see a montage of Ari's lonely life. Sky's parents mourn and move away. Ari graduates. Gets a job working at a bookstore. The impromptu memorial for Sky rots. Ari (VO): And the next. And the next. And the next. And the next. And the next. And then five years were gone.

I really wish people would stop using slop to just mean 'thing I don't like' or 'stuff that is part of a trend'.

Neither of those are inherently worthy of being called slop. You really gotta earn that title by being low-quality, low effort products of greed and laziness.

Ari: It's me? it's YOU! How are you even real? How are you alive? You were gone. You were dead. Sky pulls back to get a good look at him. Sky: Gone? Yes. Dead? Not just yet. Ari, don't you know where we are? It's the bladelands. It's real, Ari. It's all real. Always has been. Just like I thought. Gods, you look so well. So young! Other than the scruff, you look just the same. Ari: Heh, I guess. I dunno. But this does explain her. He waves awkwardly at Zerra. Her elf ears assume an expression that resembles someone cocking their eyebrows. Ari: If we're in the bladelands, that's why there's an elf.
