"Our economy is now dependent on bullshit-suicide-machines, therefore we must continue to shovel billions more dollars into bullshit-suicide-machines." 🤣

This is so funny.

The A-Team credits were a lie. What the fuck
Knowing your love of a pop culture founding myth, the A-Team opening begins by saying they're wanted for a crime they didn't commit.

The crime: robbing the bank of Hanoi

The defence: they were ordered to do so by US Command

The point: that order is *still illegal*: you cannot rob civilian banks!

There was a 50yr window in which it made economic sense to teach coding in schools and the British education system missed all of it.

Still reeling from the Stanford report on Brexit. Reduced GDP by up to 8% and investment by as much as 18%. The UK Treasury would have £40 billion more each year if Britain had remained in the EU. Devastating self-immolation.

Our new paper is out in Nature Communications! nature.com/articles/s41...

We combined psychophysics, 7T fMRI, and computational modeling of vision with placebo, 5mg, and 10mg psilocybin, in the same group of participants, to clarify the computational mechanisms of psychedelics. 🧵

At least the 2008 crash was about a bet that housing would never decline. The next one will be about betting that six companies who sell each other magic beans would never decline

Wow - this is cool. Could be a game-changer.
Is the “standard workflow” holding back fMRI analysis?

Mass-univariate analysis is still the bread-and-butter: intuitive, fast… and chronically overfitted. Add harsh multiple-comparison penalties, and we patch the workflow with statistical band-aids. No wonder the stringency debates never die.

My dissertation paper finally dropped in Nature Communications!

Overall, the conclusion is that psilocybin may be useful in reducing drug craving that often precipitates relapse through mechanisms related to 5-HT2A activation.

Sex-specific role of the 5-HT2A receptor in psilocybin-induced extinction of opioid reward - Nature Communications
Here Jaster et al., show a single psilocybin dose produce sex-specific post-acute changes in opioid reward and withdrawal via 5-HT2A receptors in frontal cortex-to–nucleus accumbens circuits, with epi...

“Never trust a professor who makes their grad students pay for their own food or coffee.” -the immortal Chris Krueger, sending me off to grad school
What’s the most significant advice you received from a teacher?

I had a Geology prof who always said “have strong opinions, loosely held”

Be passionate, assess alternatives with conviction, take sides. But don’t fall so in love with your opinions that you can’t change them with better data.

I really hate it when scientists keep saying that “we need to rebuild trust in science,” because it implies that scientists are to blame for the mistrust rather than the millions of dollars of dark money that have funded political attacks on science in order to advance a far right agenda.

If they stuff some AI nonsense into Google Scholar I am throwing a paving stone through the window of the nearest Google office. Who’s with me?
I suspect that soon, because of "AI", I'll be unable to use Google Scholar. What a loss. OpenAlex is incredible, but its algorithm has, for me, never been as effective for finding relevant papers. (note: OpenAlex does have a new engine; I haven't tested it much, but it might help)
