There was a wonderful interview with the veteran pro wrestler Minoru Suzuki about five years ago where he said that all the genuinely great wrestlers are bad at some aspect of being a wrestler. Someone who was an 8/10 in everything would be the most boring performer in the world.
The great old comedy writer Larry Gelbart said that your style is formed by what you can’t do. I wish more people understood that. That and the Martha Graham quote about keeping the channel open.

Alison Bailey told me pro-trans lawyers keep eating her legal fees so I asked her how much money she has and she said she just goes to JK Rowling afterwards so I said it sound's like she's just feeding money to trans lawyers and now Helen Joyce is crying.

Observational research, broadly speaking, seeks to expand our knowledge of the the data-generating processes underlying reality.

Research using synthetic data expands our knowledge of the process that generated the synthetic dataset.

They are explicitly, trivially, and facially not the same thing.
Did you know that from tomorrow, Qualtrics is offering synthetic panels (AI-generated participants)?

Follow me down a rabbit hole I'm calling "doing science is tough and I'm so busy, can't we just make up participants?"

Also we've fetishized "debate” in these spaces as some kind of civic good, when what matters is competence, trust, shared purpose. Medicine, engineering, boardrooms aren’t organized around debate or requirements of false balance. We've poisoned public discourse by insisting it be adversarial.

My least popular (and most correct) view is that cars should be automatically limited to the local speed limit. Put the pedal to the floor and you still can't go over 25mph in a residential area.

(15 in Manhattan btw)
There is no possible justification for limiting e-bikes to 15mph but not cars.
