New people! I choose to present myself as a cat here as a warning about the level of capriciousness I display.

I will hiss at you and block you for a bad vibe. I don't give a fuck. Your rug may be subjected to the full force of the Strategic Pissing Initiative.

The elderly are physically and financially healthier than ever. So why do their needs keep taking priority over younger generations? writes Greg Ip.

getting back to the BLS list, one thing that's immediately apparent in local employment data is the regular primacy of the local school district and the local hospital system as employers. teaching and healthcare and their support systems.

again, not things easily augmented by Santa Claude.

anyhow. that exercise taught me quite a bit about the strengths and limitations of the view that knowledge was merely strings of letters, and that surprising new knowledge could be generated algorithmically.

(I also can make Excel text formulas dance as a result, though it's a pain in the ass.)

it's a programming language that specialized in searching and manipulating strings of text.

I was interested in natural language processing because of ELIZA, of course. how advanced of a practical parser could I write?

since there wasn't a home implementation of SNOBOL, I used it conceptually.

there was an early computer language called SNOBOL, used quite a bit in library science. I learned it from textbooks I checked out with my mom's card from the local college.

I know the foot guys are foot guys, but if they were a solid electoral bloc, President Harris would be in her second year in office.

I found this out via the other place, but Harris once legitimately won the Wiki Feet of the Day award, not as a stunt. do what you will with that knowledge.

I would simply not get my substantive views on political economy from Twitter user crispy_penis67 and a bunch of randomass Twitch comments

Admiral Motti was an evil man in an evil regime, but he was willing to be stand up to and maybe be killed by forces beyond his understanding because he was sick of that fucking Jedi bullshit.

I assume Bomber Harris felt the same way about Hogwarts.

Again, unclear on the logic of the argument; subsequent Democratic Congresses have improved on the ACA an seem poised to continue to do so, and it’s unclear what “permanent solution” is foreclosed or foregone here.

One thought for liberal and leftist foreign and defense policy making going forward: the ACA is the most sweeping and successful piece of legislation in a generation.

I don’t like to accuse people of insincerity when they bring attention to real issues but the ‘what about Yemen’ movement when Russia invaded Ukraine has really failed to keep up with anything actually happening in Yemen since

I know gaming this out is undeserved attention but really think about it

ICE's thing is jumping individuals with localized numerical overmatch, how do they do that at a polling location where there are presumably dozens of people (not including the poll workers) there at a time
It's not lost on me how all the talking heads pissing themselves at the thought of ICE and CBP doing the Russian sham referendum strat are all privileged white guys

They are doing something that is far harder than any other AI company right now -- making a system that controls hardware in unforgiving physical conditions, under a thicket of regulations, and they have been doing it without you needing to see their CEO mouthing off in the news every day

There are, of course, a lot of reasonable objections to what they are doing and how they are doing it, but from the vantage point of 2026 its behavior that needs to be rewarded for others to emulate it

Waymo and Anthropic are two AI companies people here should reward, regardless of their feelings about AI as a whole or the respective companies. Waymo has, for years, incrementally plugged away at making a technology work. Out of the public eye, without any big flashy demos
whatever you think about Waymo they are light-years ahead of Tesla on this front and it is deeply infuriating that folks are still propping up the stock price based on Elon's lies about taking this stuff national

People are such fuckin' weirdos in the quotes about this. She's not unnamable, she's an ex-ac medievalist named Mary Rambaran-Olm and she spends seemingly 85% of her free time talking about "'zios' eating babies," spreading conspiracies, and pleasantly interacting w people who say we run the banks.
the answer to this is that there’s a yarn supplier/medievalist that a lot of people start engaging with because she’s Black and does (important!) work around anti-racism but also she went off the deep end of antisemitism several years ago and I guess some people followed her down the rabbit hole
That's horrible, and I totally get it - it feels like you've been tricked, and they've just done a horrible, horrible 'ta-da!' reveal.

Though the mind boggles how one would move from knitting to Nazi views. But then, as a dyspraxic crocheter, the ability to use 2 needles seems like dark magic....
