I'm calling it -- this is my last blog post of 2025. I'm officially taking that break I mentioned last week, and I'm doing it right this time. So today is when I get to wish you a merry everything and happy always. I'm currently starting the wrap up of 2025. Planning for 2026 happens this week and next, and I'll close the book on 2025 on the 21st, after the Ravenflight signing at Spellbound (info on that is below.) I can honestly say that it's been an excellent year. I tried some new things, and they worked very well, and I've already got events set up for 2026, with more in process that will be added to the calendar as they are confirmed.

Ten years ago on December 14th I posted "Dolph," after a conversation among some queer friends and fellow authors about "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer," and it started a tradition of re-telling holiday stories through a queer lens that’s been going for a decade now.
Dolph
He was named Rudolph when he was born, but like so many born different, he eventually shed the one he was given. And if it hadn’t been for a foggy night and a hard decision, the rest of us fr…

COVID isn’t acting like the viruses most of us grew up with, and treating it like “just a cold” is putting people at real risk. David Brasure breaks down why SARS-CoV-2 is fundamentally different, how it causes long-term damage, and what we can do to protect ourselves.

Art is an act of hope. Writing is an act of rebellion. The world will always need more stories--from real human beings, not bullshit plagiarism machines. Every book is a love story from the author, and every reader is fighting the war against cruelty, ignorance, and hopelessness. We are fighting.

Gorgeous colorizations of trans history images,

and a lot of incredible stories, including many lesser-known to many (A Zapatista colonel, a "transvestite pass" issued in 1928, the Scottish nobleman who the courts ruled should inherit his baronetcy in the 60s... for example...)
Coloring the Past - Eli Erlick
Using recent breakthroughs in photo editing techniques, Eli colorizes, restores, and digitizes photos from queer and trans history. The following images are originally from 1897-1973.

If the X has turned into the Nazi bar allegory isn’t enough to persuade ppl, here are some others.

Twitter was a ship that got taken over by pirates. They OWN the ship. You being there VALIDATES their criminality.

Elon PROFITS off of you being on X.

Would you hang out on 4chan? If no, get off X.
Quite frankly, I think non-fascists who are still using Twitter and somehow still believe it’ll help them achieve non-fascist aims are 100% delusional. It’s pathetic.
It's a censorship engine designed to promote ideas that Elon Musk likes and suppress ideas that Elon Musk does not like. I really don't get why this evident fact - that Musk openly admits! - is so hard for so many people to understand

This week, I withdrew from a speaking engagement at a public university because they sent me a list of prohibited “words & concepts.” I will not humor this censorship. It does a disservice to the stories I’m discussing & the audience, who deserve unfettered access to information & conversation.

I considered writing a long carefully constructed argument laying out the harms and limitations of AI, but instead I wrote about being a hater. Only humans can be haters.

I've had a few 'what do you do' convs recently, and everyone on hearing I'm an author comes out with "so how do you come up with ideas?", just like every book or movie about a writer has them staring numbly into space because they don't have an idea for the next book. And look, that is Not It.

Human brains produce new ideas every second of every day. Sit down with a tiny child and ask them to explain something they're doing and you will hear half a dozen of them. Ideas are what humans *do*. The idea is by far the easiest part of any creative process.
But the point (there is a point) is, people fetishise the idea over the hard work of plotting and character development and research and internal consistency and just writing the fucker, because the Idea is the sparkly magic bit.

And this is what makes them put value in the AI prompt.

Why am I so against generative AI in games?

Because I simply do not want my initial reaction to art to be one of suspicion and scrutiny, AI slop is fundamentally damaging my relationship to art and artistry, and I am deeply resentful that it is forcing me to be guarded when I should be wowed.

...yeah. Okay. Enough.

This happens every year, it seems. The SFWA awards a writer the Grand Master Award, and if that writer is not a white male, a portion of the fanbase begins complaining vociferously about the award winner.

These "fans" are, of course, white men, 45+ years old.
