I really don’t think we can overstate the harm that the tech ethos of move fast and break things (followed by the unsaid “and then just move on”) has done beyond tech. Government, ngos, universities, public schools that have invited the folks who think like this in keep ending up gutted
All DOGE accomplished was purging critical government staff, handing private data to outsiders, and sentencing thousands in developing countries to death by gutting USAID.

I don’t say this lightly: if there were any justice in this world, the people responsible for this devastation would be in jail
DOGE 'doesn't exist' with eight months left on its charter
U.S. President Donald Trump's Department of Government Efficiency has disbanded with eight months left to its mandate.

this is not a drag of the writer of this particular piece, which is largely sympathetic, but this line of argument makes me nuts

young people are involved in protest and organizing at several levers of power—but they're not able to show up to photo op street rallies at the same rates as retirees

Have to believe the COP30 venue is a psyop to convince negotiators of the urgency to address climate change. There's now been:

🔥A fire that burned through the plastic venue
🌊Frequent flooding due to improper drainage
🌡️Inadequate AC for a tropical location
🚨Lax security to stop protesters

Trump's economy is being held up by a massive AI bubble.

A recent study found that of 300 companies that owned generative AI tools, 95% reported zero return on their investments.

We will not entertain a bailout of these companies should this bubble pop.

A year ago, Trump won and I was furious and scared so I sent a text to a few of local women I knew and asked them to join me at a meeting and invite like-minded women they knew. A few showed up, then a few more. We became a group called The Salon and we meet monthly

Helsinki just went a full year without a single traffic death

Exactly--not only do captive parrots require ample time and energy to keep happy, but the pet trade is the driving force behind their disappearance in the wild. Anyone who thinks they want a pet parrot should do ample research ahead of time, and then make sure you adopt one from a parrot rescue.
I worked at the Pepperberg Lab back in the day where I cared for African grey parrots. It was a very rewarding experience, but caring for an African grey is a JOB!! The birds are very intelligent and social, and they are NOT TOYS.

I think many of us feel this way. Even those of us working on climate full-time have had to redirect valuable attention to navigate federal disruptions.

But given the threats to people and planet posed by this administration, I think it's fair to say securing our democracy *is* climate action.
I'm just sad I've paid less attention to climate this year than any previous one in the last dozen, because it seems like we have to claw our way back to democracy first.....
