The Labour right is composed of two tendencies that are really quite distinct – and the liberal tendency increasingly feels marginalised within this government (as @morganj0nes.bsky.social and @stephenkb.bsky.social have reported)

The UK isn’t a “soft touch” on asylum.

UK asylum seeker benefits are similar to European neighbours

No right to work before 12 months (it’s 6 months in France, Spain, Belgium, Netherlands)

UK settlement after 5 years (it’s 3 or 4 in Germany)

Let’s cut out the alarmist rhetoric.

The use of AI for things like theoretical "public art" is so interesting, because it shows that there are a lot of people that don't understand what art is for, or indeed the concept of the beautiful. AI cannot produce art because it has no consciouness, no soul, so it can't produce the beautiful.
This mural has gone up in Kingston, ostensibly for Christmas but AI has ensured it's actually to celebrate the return of our dark lord Cthulhu

There is no evidence that stripping refugees' rights one by one will have any impact on people crossing the channel.

Taking jewellery from refugees is akin to painting over murals for refugee children.

These repugnant ‘deterrents’ did not work for the Tories, and they won't work for us.

The Prime Minister said in September that we are at a fork in the road. These asylum proposals suggest we have taken the wrong turning.

The idea that recognised refugees need to be deported is wrong.

Came across this from just before the election last year. Such a footnote but also as I read it back one that illustrates so many of the problems that were to come.

A new Director General, a new Charter... a new model of ownership?

It's all change at the BBC, but the change to a mutual model is well overdue.

We think the BBC should be owned by you, the public.

Delighted to publish Colm and Patrick's eminently sensible pre-budget intervention:
Breaking the tax pledge is the right call...and politically sulphurous. Reeves must argue, far more forcefully, that taxes are *the* essential downpayment we all pay for a fairer society.

Patrick Diamond and I wrote for @renewaljournal.bsky.social. Key points in 🧵 👇

If Labour want a fairer society, they must argue for it
Labour must make the political argument: taxes are the critical downpayment we all pay to live in a fairer society.  It now seems all but certain that direct taxes will rise in the forthcoming Budget...

The idea of UK learning from Denmark on immigration and asylum is primarily rhetorical: pick fights with the left about how tough we are willing to sound.

The integration context is very different. The broader immigration context is very different.
