what separates Personas from Codec Avatars isn't just that it's a shipping product running on consumer hardware, but that their models and approach allows scanning to be done very quickly and your avatar generated and rendered locally. one of the big advantages of Apple Silicon

in this round of press post M5 launch, the news they're doling out is official confirmation that Personas are created using Gaussian Splats (which is what Meta's Codec Avatars use as well). potentially related Apple Research publication here: machinelearning.apple.com/research/hugs

also doesn't seem to have any foveated rendering in the video feed, so could have been a unique developer capture mode. i would love for there to be some kind of virtual camera functionality to capture Persona meetings

note of interest: the recording was done by a member on Apple's team who was in the FaceTime call but not as a Persona, but presumably capturing their perspective as our "camera" using a Vision Pro. the video they shared was 4K 30Mbps, compared to the 1080p 13Mbps of AVP's screen record feature

our interview covered the exact same ground as what was shown to other outlets, so we won't be make a video about it. but this was less about breaking any news than showing more people how good Personas look now, especially in comparison to other avatar systems used by competing XR headsets
